firebird 500 to {be or not to be?}
just wondering if anyone knows much about the old trusty firebird 500 or its prototype the kicker 500; what will these units do stock and can they be modded ?ive heard they can be upgraded with some less expensive modern tubes.

I have two of them, one of which needs re-tubed. They can be modded to a straight 4 tube config as compared to the stock 1x3 set-up. I was also told they can be set-up just using the single driver tube by itself if you're driving a larger amp (switchable to the stock 1x3 config). This was recommended to me for use with my SB-220. Supposedly they can be changed over to the more readily available EL509/519 tubes also. Check with this guy:

He's just down the road from Firebird's old plant in IN and does a change-over swapping 31LQ6's for the stock 6JE6C's, which, as I'm sure you're aware, might as well be gold-plated for the price they're bringing these days. I don't know what kind of $$$ this mod costs.
A guy over at WWRF PM'd me and says he can get NOS 6JE6C/6LQ6's all day every day from someplace in WI for $35 each, but I've not dealt with him before.
Hope this helps. I've always had good luck with the old 'Birds.
