2517 Loss of transmit power!!!

#105093

Post by Slim Jim »

I've got a Galaxy 2517, was keying up 8 and swinging to about 35-40 watts. Now, the power has begun to fluctuate the past couple of days and now it keys 3 watts and swings to about 10 max. I don't know whats going on, and I'm getting frustrated with this thing. It's always been a good radio, and I've always babied it. I'm going to list the things that I've done to it to try to correct it, but they didn't work. I've tapped around on the board a few times and lightly jiggled a few things which would kick the power back up for a few seconds, but its very intermittent...and it's never the same thing that makes it kick back up. That's what leads me to believe it may be a diode at fault or maybe a capacitor... Anyway, here's what I've done so far: Replaced driver, replaced both finals, replaced all voltage regulators, checked a few diodes for continuity, checked the 239 fitting on the back for a good connection, looked over the entire board for ANYTHING loose or out-of-place, checked the board grounds, checked the main power coming to the board and got a consistant 13.8 reading. . . Anyway, the power is still there, just very little. It's the same on sideband, as well. Receive is fine, along with all other functions. The variable power switch functions, it varies the little power that is still there! Anyway, if anyone has ever heard of this symptom and has any idea of what it might be, any help or clue would be greatly, and I mean GREATLY, appreciated!

I'm I screwed? What's the point of having a dual final base if it doesn't talk any louder than a handheld?

Sorry to hear about your 2517 problem. I don't know a whole lot about power supplies but I do think even if you have 13.8 volts you still may be lacking in amps. Could still be a power supply issue. I would give Mike at radioactive a call. He knows all about the 2517's power supplies and their problems.

hmmmm...yeah, I might give him a call tomorrow if I can get a chance. It's gotta be something simple that I'm overlooking...that's what really irritates me. I've heard that they have had numerous problems with the power supplies on similar units, that could very well be the problem. I'll check that next. Thanks Hound Dog

The power supplies in the 2517s is inconsistant, and sometimes plain poor. A 8 watt high DK is alot for a key on a 2517, the max I set them up at is 4.9w-5.2w. Unless theres other reasons to change that of course.
Call me monday afternoon, and we'll see what we can do. I rec'd your pm.
Hang in there bud, we'll get your radio rocking for ya!
