New to me radio coming, need to rig up a base!

#105449

Post by Mentor3006 »

I have a new to me TRC 465 coming (#3 now...) and I want to rig it up as a base so I can shoot skip from the house...

I have never set up a base myself, but seen some setups, I didn't pay enough attention though... What I want to know is...

#1. What can I do to set up an antenna for this thing on a budget, and with homeowners association restrictions? I was thinking about mounting a 102" wired to a ground cable pounded into the earth, and stuffed up in a tree. But I am certain there are better antenna options. But what works well that won't run me into the welfare home?

#2. What is a good AC to DC converter for this setup? I will be running barefoot, so I don't need huge amperage.

#3. Back on the antenna thing. What can do do for foul weather protection? Specifically high wind loads and lightning protection?

Can someone reccomend a good amplified desk mic for this rig? Perhaps a D104 or something similar?

1) The home owner association AND budget hurt my ideas. With an HOA getting retractable pipe would be great. Put it up to use, lower when not in use but that may shoot the budget. Doing the 102 as you said with a ground rod to earth would take care of the lightning worries. Of course disconnect the coax from radio in a storm for best security.

2) As for name brand I can't say. As for amperage, I see 10 amps is recommended alot even for a minor set up.

3) A 102 whip, even A99 or Imax have low wind load. Especially the 102. A thick branch in a tree would be a must if you run it up a tree. Tree mounting I suspect could get tricky. Maybe 1 inch pipe with a mirror mount attached to it and the pipe steel banded to a branch

Desk mics ... It's hard to go wrong a D104. i've never heard a Turner that I liked the sound of. I always ran D104's. I love 'em and that distinguished puck unkey sound to the receiving station is cool.

antron in a tree. if you have hoa, snoopy people are always looking....here is a pic of how to hang it. the whip wont work anywhere near as efficient, because you wont have that nice metal groundplane, it probably wont even work as well as the mobil. i am posting a pic of how to hang one in the base setups catagory if you want to look. 209

I have heard good and bad things about the Antron 99. What are the gotchas with that antenna?

209 your pic didn't come through . here's a link to another post on it with the pic .

that's a very cool idea that i haven't seen elsewhere . the rope would also allow lowering it to the ground during very bad weather .

10 Amps for a stock rig?! Seems a bit high. My Icom runs @ 120 watts and draws about 19 amps on the high swing.

For a stock CB radio they usaully draw about 3-4 amps. Peak and tuned stock box's can draw 5 - almost 6.

Did I mention I have a 7amp supply for sale? =-) PM me for more information. Like new , 10/10 ! Works A !

Imax should work fine if you can get the feed point about 20 to 25 ft high

An Antron will not apease the HOA. I would do an indoor dipole placed in a room away from the control base. If you have a attic you can place it up there. You can also lay the Antron on it's side in the attic, suspended by heavy line. For a quick easy antenna and would not cost more than $10.00 the wire dipole would be the best. If cut the resonants you would not need a tuner. Equation is 468/frequency in Mhz. As far as the power supply goes, any 7-10 amp would be adequate. Good Luck

This won't really work. At least not very well. You'd be better off shoving an Antron 99 or Imax 2000 up in the tree.
