Running Coax

Well after some great advice on here, I purchased a new Wilson 1000, and a new Uniden Pc-78 (I believe). when I get my package, how can I run the coax cable without drilling? I'm not to keen on drilling holes all over my roof, So should I run it through a window? I kind of like the idea of being able to roll the window down and pop the antenna off for mobility to another truck, but will any issues arise with kinking the coax? All suggestions are welcome.

Kinking the cable is very likely, but as long as you don't roll window all the way up you shouldn't worry about it, but that will cause some wind noise. The best way is to find a drain plug in the floor board or firewall that you can pop out the rubber plug and run it through there. But that doesn't leave much room to be flexible to move it to another vehicle. And yes kinking the coax can cause it to break on the inside causing it to short out.

It depends on the automobile. A truck will have holes already punched in the floor. They will have a metal cover. Just get a grommet to fit the hole and pass the wire though. A car it can be ran though the back seat out of the trunk and to the roof.

The truck is a 2000 Chevy Tahoe 4WD so if anyone knows, where would these holes be located?

when i ran a mag mount antenna i just ran the coax in through the least used door . in my case it was the rear passenger side .

You're out of luck with the grommet option on the Tahoe... you either run it through a window, route it out along a door sill, or you drill a hole in the roof. When I first started running a CB, I ran a magnet mount and routed it along the door sill into the dash (I then bowed out of the CB world for a while). Now that I'm running a radio again, I decided on the roof mount and have been much happier with the setup.

I agree. Lift up the carpet behind the back seat (or front seat if it's a single cab) and there should be a rubber gromet to run the coax up. That's the best place in my opinion to run your coax. That's how mine is on my pickup truck. I even ran my power wires that way too to keep them out of the way...just be sure hte sharp edges of the sheet metal flood don't strip the power wires or coax b/c if you strip that coax you're gonna blow the final in your radio with high SWR's.

If you did want to drill for power to amp one place could be below your steering shaft coming thru firewall.

I think the majority of the posters have missed the original poster's problem. He's NOT mounting the antenna on a PICKUP TRUCK. He's trying to mount an antenna on a TAHOE (where the whole vehicle is cabin space). You either have to route the coax through a door or you drill a hole in the roof.

my holes were there already with some rubber in them here is a pic or 2 got the braided plastic hose at the hardware store.

I understand the Tahoe problem, but I would still look for a grommet somewhere in the firewall. On my Ranger pick-up the grommet is on the passenger side of the firewall, and quite accessible from under the vehicle behind the front tire. This grommet was large so there was plenty of room for a small slit to run power and coax through. In my case the coax runs down behind the cab between it and the bed then along the frame to the firewall. On the Tahoe getting the coax down the side of the truck itself might require running it down the windshield A-pillar with some small stick-ons to wire tie the coax to. These can be spray painted to be less noticeable.
