President Madision or Uniden Madision

#114458

Post by BIOHARZARD »

The president Madison has the green mechanical clock and
the Uniden Madison has the digital clock ...( that i know of)
My question is which of the 2 radios is better?
Which does more peak power and has the better audio ??

Presently I do have the President Madison with 2 matching speakers..
Its doing about 25W peak and has the extra channels in it...

Is the Uniden Madison better ? or no ??

Thanks in advance..

I will admit that I'm guessing but I'd say they are both the same as far as operational specs. President IS/was Uniden. I think they dropped the President name from the line a few years ago and now it's all just Uniden named. The Uniden Madison is simply the newer model. Both are ordinary legal CB's and the specs. should be about the same.

im guessing but i think dx monkey is pretty close on the mark. what i will say is those are cool ol radios. ill probably get run out of dodge but, i personaly liked the looks of the uniden presadent series better than the cobra 1000 / 2000 base radios. ive seen some NICE CLEAN examples of both on flea bay.

Back in the 80's I had a now rarely seen President Adams. It was their top of the line AM/SSB and looked and worked great. Had a DigiScan unit connected to it so the Digiscan controlled the frequency changing and it went from 26.000~28.000 strait through. That was a sweet setup. You see an Adams on Ebay every once in awhile but not very often. I'd prefer an Adams over a Cobra 148 GTL but really neither of them or any strait SSB CB compares to the RCI Ranger 2950 that I have now.

I'm a bit new to the forum, but I remember having one of each over the years, the biggest difference between the two is that the older President Madisons had a different PPL chip than the new Unidens did. It wasn't a perfect transition, but the older Presidents could be found with a 858 PLL chip inside which was very easy to add the freeband channels to.

Performance speaking, they were both reasonably good radios, just one was a bit easier to modify than the other. I remember many people considered them the poorman's Cobra 2000, since both shared many of the same components, and offered comparable performance. The biggest obvious difference being the lack of a frequency counter in the Madison.

For some reason, I like the look of the Madison over the Cobra 2000. I don't know why...I just do.

As far as the Madison's go, both are nice radios and are easily modified and worked on, particularly the older "President" ones that are from the early 1980's...

The President Adams was, and still is, one of the best President radios you can find. They are relatively rare too, as they are becoming sought after radios. As an older-radio enthusiast, I'd like to get a hold of one of the older Adams, they have the same PLL that my 1979-80 President Grant has..

To say which one is "better" is going to be rather difficult. The newer one might have some more advanced technology, but the older one has the MADE IN JAPAN quality marker, that is unbeaten when it comes to CB sets nowadays. All of my gear is either American or Japanese, no China crap here!

My rule of thumb: Get a solid, Japanese or American radio with good modification ability, and you are good to go!

This post was started in early November and the poster is now banned, I don't think he is reading it anymore.

Anyways, its nice the hear that Jester, my dad has a Cobra29, with only channels 1-23 in great shape... it was made in Japan, and he also has another Cobra made in Japan that only has 1-23, nice to know they were quality (for their time) :D

As has already been indicated there isn't a big difference. But...here they are:
1. 858 pll vs. 8719 pll. The earlier chip can be channeled farther.
2. If the finals are original...1307 vs. 1969. Both will do about the same power. The 1969 will take more abuse.
3. Clocks...analog vs. digital. The analog clocks are known to stop working over time.
4. Reciever...I would give a slight edge to the later model here although it's splitting hairs.
5. Capacitors in the older rigs have had more time to dry out/fail.

Both good rigs...both loud when tuned by a competent tech.

Useless Info Alert: They made the flip from President to Uniden in about 83. I had a Zach T. that out of the box had a president mic and uniden on the face, evidently caught in the crossover. I too prefer the look of that over the cobras. -drdx
