OK I'm just wanting to know which base radio is the better of the two.

I am 100% Ranger Man....BUT...
Do not buy that ranger. Buy that 2547. Yes, Galaxies are known to be SSB drifters, but you will not like that Ranger.
That ranger is not like most RCI's. It is not a 10 meter radio. That radio is a CB RADIO!
Anytime you have to add channels to a non-10 meter radio, you have to add switches. Plus even after adding switches, it will only have about half the channels that Galaxy has.
If you want a Ranger base, then buy the 2980WX or 2995. Easily channel modable, and lots of freq's.
EDITED: On second thought, I wouldn't get either. I thought you said 2527 and not 2547. Error on my behalf. Of the 2 you have there, I say the Ranger, but if you want a real base, get a 2980wx or 2995 or find a good old mint Galaxy 2517, or 2527. There's lots of variations out there. Eagle 2000's, General Stonewall Jackson, etc. Both the radios you have listed have to have extra channels with flip switches, and it won't be long till you're tired of the normal 40 and want to talk somewhere quieter.

Hey Midnight Eagle, I was just reading your profile and I see that you already have a 2547! If you're looking for something new because you're bored with that radio or not satisfied with its performance, you're probably gonna want to look at something completely different than the ranger 696 SSB. It's just about the same radio with the same performance as the 2547 and the 959/949. What are you looking for in a base setup? More power? More stable sideband operation? Give us some clues to what you are wanting and we'll try to go from there.

Well I purchased the galaxy and then i got an email saying they were out of stock but they would give me the ranger for $ 30 less but it was a refurbished one from the factory so i thought i would ask yawls opinion on the two so that is where i stand.

Upgrade. Check into a clean used ICOM IC-718. Commercial toughness, you'll need a power supply, but a good 100 watt ssb/40 watt carrier am all business radio. Used they are in the $400 range. Brand new, only 549. -drdx

O, I gotcha dude! I'd say go for it as long as you're happy with that 959 you have. I had a 696SSB that I just sold............I thought it was a great radio as long as you remember that it is only a cb. Now, having said that, it took me a total of 10 minutes to do the channel mod and that included drilling the holes in the case and mounting the switches. Don't let the lack of channels scare you away....it's a very modifiable radio and treated me great. Talked all over the country with ease with that radio backed up by a 2 pill base box and an Imax 2000.
