I'm not much of an antenna expert, but I don't see any reason to run cophase. Wilson 5000 mag mount it a great antenna. I'm not sure about doing a roof mount antenna because a 79 truck may not have a head liner to conceal the coax.

Another popular antenna option is a 102" whip mounted to the center of the bed, up against the cab. I'm sure some other guys will chime in with their experience.

Well, I wouldn't co-phase anything if it were my set up, but if you are set on this type of install, since it is an older truck, does it have the type of mirrors that you can mount mirror mount brackets to? Some of them older trucks have the mirror arms that will accommodate the mirror mount brackets. Otherwise, mag mount. I know that you said you are afraid that it will fly off, but those mags are stronger than one thinks. Or you could go one step further if you are afraid you'll lose it and get a tri-mag set up and still run the 5K trucker style. Most of our sponsors carry the mag mounts or you can construct your own, drdx on here has some great parts for building your own, He has sold me a few of them. But if this is for off roading, I sure wouldn't want to 102" at all. Those will really catch the trees you mentioned earlier.

I had two wilson 5000 truckers with the 10" shaft on my dodge pickup until a couple days ago. They were mounted to the mirrors. They looked cool but were very directional. Good (or so I thought) to front and rear but not much to the sides. Then I read where if you are running two antennas that they need to be 17 feet apart before you actually would see an advantage over a single antenna. Truckers however get an advantage of running a dual set up because of the shape of the truck and trailer. Well after reading that I decided to try just one on the cab of the truck. So I got me a wilson stainless steel surface mount #305-610 and mounted it to the rear of the roof, center left to right, and then changed the coax from 75 ohm to 50 ohm. Mounted the antenna, set the swr's and this one antenna talks much better than the two did. It still has the 10" shaft on it but if I was to be doing a lot of off roading then I would get the 5" shaft or get a wilson sw-2000 trucker.

I wouldn't mount on the tool box. You wouldn't be happy with the performance unless you can put risers on to get the coils above the cab. But then they would flop all over the place. 102? Not if you're going to be off roading, you mentioned that low trees are a problem in your area. You can do it, but if clearance is an issue, an 8 1/2 foot tall antenna? Probably be hitting a lot of those trees you mentioned earlier. If you want to run duals and you want clearance and are worried about snagging branches, consider 2 Wilson FGT or Silverloads is what I call them. They are "top loaded" Which means the coils are on top. 2 3 footers or 4 footers would be alright, I would do the 4 ft myself.
