Or..........just get something akin to my signature and just be done with it.
I.E. Go with whatever base radio floats your boat and then go with a 4 element quad with around 500-1KW, LMR-400, Rohn 25G up at least 50', properly installed, and let the rest of the town suffer. If someone thinks they can be bigger, spend the $$$$$$$. Don't tell me about it, show me.
That's the way I look at it. Know what I'm sayin'? Minimum expenditure (sorta'), maximum results.

Do it right the first time. Buy a beam. I have a beam, and my old verticals, and I don't even use any of them other than the beam. I run a mobile on a power supply with a little bit of extra power. THe power multiplacation is awsome. I think sells JoGunn beams. The baddest antennas around. I talked to a guy from Florida that was only running a 3 element, and he was louder than my neighbor pointing his beam at my beam.

The only thing you need is a radio, a microphone, and a beam. I cant stress BEAM enough if you want to "lock down the town"
Any 40 channel CB base will do...I'd recommend a desk mic, maybe a D104...do you need/use SSB? That's something else to consider...
Then, don't forget the coax! Belden 9913 RG8 Semi-flexible low loss is a great value with superior quality. Andrew and LMR-400 from Times Microwave are also very good but quite expensive.
It you can't put up a beam, try and shoot for an Imax 2000 or a Maco V5/8 5000. Nice choices for the chimney that won't hurt your eyes, or the neighbors.
Good luck!

Good advice on the antenna and coax. It is THE most important part. The only kicker with running a beam is that it can get a little difficult to lock down your own town with one, if you're in the middle with stations all around. Kinda like being in an army tank. You're powerful and in the middle, and you can only spin your gun around to one direction at a time, leaving vulnerable signal holes. A good high vertical and 2kw carrier will handle that for most small towns if local comp is not of the fierce variety. As far as locking down other towns, location is everything and locking down a town 10 miles away is tough if anyone over there is running power between each other, based on proximity alone, but you'll still have fun. Locking it down is fun, but you want to talk to these folks too. It's a lot more fun on there with a bunch of friends that respect you as a powerhouse, than to be the guy that chases everyone off. Power wise, I would go straight to a tube amp. Don't mess around with anything smaller than a kilowatt. I'm talking a large Ameritron, Alpha, Henry, Commander, or I'm sure others will recommend their favorites. Plan on a dedicated circuit to the radio room and go ahead an go 220. I would go for big deadkey, in the locking it down tradition. Radio wise it's up to you, as the choices are numerous, same on microphones. -drdx

$7,500 will get you a 3cx10,000a7 box with transformer that runs off of 220VAC at 120Amps....then you will have 25k Bird watts with a good beam at about $1,000 with a tower or something to mount it on, then another $500 to cover the rotor and misc. parts. Then you can get a 3 tube 3-500z box for $1,100 used to drive the 10,000 box. ... this will be a good start to shut down the county when you key...all total of around $11,000 to be a safe number no more.

if u wanna lock down the town meaning skipland, go for the beam. if u wanna lock it down maening locally, the beam wont do it. youll need a vertical. also, to lock it down you need to know your competitors equipment so you can go one better. what are people using around there? 2zero9
