Ok.. on a two pill setup would you rather do 75 swinging 175 or 100 swinging 200?
Just an informal survey

Although the S units on a meter would be real close (if not identical), The 100 watt DK w/200 PEP (IMO) would be cuttin' your lips off if you had the 75 watt DK w/175 PEP. While your signal would be dropping to 75 watts between words the 100 watt DK would be on top of you. Same on the PEP end...

Naaah---no trick questions buddy! Just trying to see folks opinions and the rationale behind them.ww228kidd wrote:lol....ok what are you up to now...lol.....Pocono Redneck wrote:Ok.. on a two pill setup would you rather do 75 swinging 175 or 100 swinging 200?

It looks to me that both scenarios have equal forward audio (100 watts) in which case I'd prefer the higher DK which wouldn't drop off as much between words.Mr.RadioActive wrote:I guess im in the minority, but I thought everyone would of wanted 75-175 for max audio. Its all about forward audio....25 watts worth of extra pep is worth less audio???

Hello. Twenty + years and my experience especially with Amps,Lower the dead key just to the point of keying Amp and not catering the relays wins every time as far as swing goes.If Amp is tuned correctly.I use tube Amps ONLY. Regards warlock35po.And yes I know this topic is ancient, iam just Bored.

Hey,
This is a really old post so don't expect any answers from those that added to it. Some have even been banned from the forum.

When one proclaims to be a radio tech before ever buying a spectrum analyzer, you end up with poll questions like this.
Both of those options are (wrong at) around 2x the dead key, and if I had to guess, I'd say the OP mistook voltage for wattage, seen twice the voltage swinging on his scope, and formulated this question based on a solid misunderstanding of ohms law. Some people try to convince others that if you just increase the positive peaks and leave the negative ones alone, that it will be fine, but there is a very fundamental principle involved here which applies to all AC currents.... Asymmetric waveforms cause even harmonic distortion. There is no way around that (without abusing the finals with what bounces off that harmonic filter back to the transistor).
When the heater in my truck fails, I'll start swinging stupid ratios. And before anyone attacks me for this opinion, I simply ask this: Knowing 11m radio and amplifier manufacturers don't care about breaking wattage laws, why don't they ship them dead keying nothing and snapping the needle on a whisper? I would love to see one of these people that say their radio is squeaky clean while modified like this post a video of their rig on a spectrum analyzer. There isn't a single reputable tech out there that will do this to a radio they are being paid to service, and if they do, they are abusing the knowledge that you, the client, only own a wattmeter and will have no idea it is also measuring the wattage at 54MHz and so on. If you do not own a spectrum analyzer, do everyone a favor and stay out of your radios. It should swing 4x what it dead keys. Not more, not less.
Edit: if anyone with a beastly radio swinging more than 4x the dead key wants to take me up on that challenge, make sure the spectrum analyzer actually spans beyond the fundamental and make sure modulation is on while you screenshot the analyzer.. You will not see the harmonics on dead key, they will only show up on modulation because that is when the waveform is asymmetrical. 26 to 140MHz span, 1kHz resolution bandwidth, modulation on (even if it is a pure sine wave into the mic)...

Polls like this get members to think, not start an argue or compete, there are other forums (unless they are defunct by now) that it can be done at.MN785 wrote: Apr 16 2022, 22:52 When one proclaims to be a radio tech before ever buying a spectrum analyzer, you end up with poll questions like this.
BTW, I do have an analyzer among all my radio equipment and still don't consider myself "tech". I'm just someone that gives out friendly advise, sometimes it's right, sometimes wrong.

...but when raising a multiple choice question where none of the answers are correct, it makes those who are on the verge of understanding something they worked hard to learn doubt what they had right to begin with. It is counter productive to self-education. It does make people think, it makes them think they are wrong and leads to discouragement in an amazing hobby that doesn't come easy. I wasn't trying to argue, I was trying to shut down a ridiculous topic. One thing hasn't changed about this forum, the clowns.MDYoungblood wrote: Apr 17 2022, 11:37Polls like this get members to think, not start an argue or compete, there are other forums (unless they are defunct by now) that it can be done at.MN785 wrote: Apr 16 2022, 22:52 When one proclaims to be a radio tech before ever buying a spectrum analyzer, you end up with poll questions like this.

I don't sit here trolling the internet looking for things to complain about. I look for ways to help people. To that end, if I see something that is detrimental to the advancement of peoples self-taught skills, I'm gonna say something.
