HF RIGG INTO AMP.

#135877

Post by busman »

OK HERE GOES. I GOT A COUPLE 3 RADIOS I USE FOR A BASE SET UP. 2 OF THE RADIOS DO 40 WATTS PEP. I USE THESE 2 RADIOS RUNNING INTO MY NEW FAT BOY AB1 4 PILL BASE AMP. IT HAS SSB BIASING TO. I HAVE A ICOM RADIO THAT DOES 100 WATTS. THE FAT BOY BASE AMP IS CONSIDERED A HIGH DRIVE AND WILL TAKE A 1 TO 15 WATT DEAD KEY AND A 50 WATT PEP SWING. I RUN A 2 TO 6 WATT DEAD KEY INTO IT SO AS NOT TO ABUSE IT. SO WHY COULDNT A GUY TURN HIS VARIABLE RF POWER DOWN ON THE ICOM TO WHERE IT WOULD SWING NO MORE THAN 40 OR 50 WATTS AND RUN IT INTO THE FAT BOY AB1 4 PILL BASE AMP. I CAN EVEN TURN THE RF POWER DOWN TO A 5 WATT DEAD KEY ON AM BUT IT SWINGS ALITTLE TO MUCH. YES THE ICOM SWINGS. A HAMWINKIE SHOP MODED THE ICOM TO DO A 100 WATTS PEAK POWER ON ANY BAND. SO WHAT DO YA THINK GUYS. COULD I SAFELY RUN THE ICOM INTO THE FAT BOY BASE AMP ON SSB WITH THE VARIABLE POWER TURNED DOWN.

I'd love to help you on that, but you'd need more of a fatboy expert most likely. I have an Icom too, hasn't been modded, and it is kinda "peaky" on wattage even if the power is set down at 20 watts or whatever if you try to add any serious amount of modulation to it, so I'd be leery of using it on that amp. The perfect amp for that rig would be a straight 8 pill. -drdx
Yes it's me, Dollar-98, drdx, the original all maul, shot cawla on workin this no-fade technology.

Hey busman...
That Icom will work fine into that amp. I don't think I'd run it on
AM...just because that's not the Icom's forte'. They aren't bad, just not great.
Turn down the rf power until you are seeing 40 peaks on ssb and hook 'er up.

thats what i was thinkin axactly preacherman. ssb only. and yes i can turn down the rf power to where it only swings to 40 watts. that fat boy ab1 4 pill is a good built little amp. it works great on my 2980,2510. ive not tryed it yet on the icom. maybe some day. that 756 pro 2 is somehin else. i still like to just fire up the 2995dx and let it rip. that thing swings to 200 watts on ssb and i run it barefoot. heck i made it to the pocono redneck on the dx fest. :D

So you could use normal 10 meter style amps for HF usage? Are you only going to use it in the 10/11 meter range or other HF bands?

Careful my 706 has a high DK with very little AVG/RMS swing. You will need to turn it way low where it wont be as "loud" my 706 will dk 40w on high. Had my DX1600 @ almost 700w dk! and all backward swing. However the 706mk2g is unreal by itself.
