Is the Uniden Washington a good entry level base?

I see a number of Uniden Washington base radios for sale. Are these a reasonably good radio for a beginner setting up a base? Would I be better advised to hold off and save my pennies and invest in a unit like a Galaxy DX-2547?

I have had a Washington Base for years and love it! I get nothing but flowers, good clean audio and very easy to mod/ peak and tune. Slap a good D104 Desk mic on that bad boy and let it ride. Enjoy!

Yeah Washington's are fine base CB's. What you want to consider is will you need more frequencies and power now or later? There are many other radios out there that come with extra 11 meters frequencies....or the whole band, and have more power output right out of the box.

These days, cb'ers that use strait 40 channel 4 watt AM - 12 watt SSB radios are in the vast minority. Most folks are using some sort of export radio or 10 meter-11 meter radio or even 100 watt ham rigs.

Lots to think about

good luck

i scored my son in law one and he had it peaked and tuned. we ran that into a texas star 350 hdv on a 46 amp power supply and it kicks major **Censored**. it will do 350 to 375 watts pep depending how loud you audio the mic. hes running a rf limited 2018 extreme mic on it and it is one of the best sounding rigs around here. people dont beleive him when he tells them what hes running. no kiddin. im jeleous of it and i set it up. they are a good, well constucted radio. its not as fancy as a rci 2995dx but it gets the job done no dought.

I ran one for a while, and a couple of buddies run them. They are easy to mod, and sound great. If you buy one, get one with the 8719.pll in it. That's the famous pll used in most of the best Cobra and Unidens ever built. You can do some great channel and clarifier mods to those radios. Team it up with a D104 type mic and it'll be a modulation king!

My only complaint is the internal speakers on those older Uniden/Presidents was pretty crappy. Nothing an external speaker, or the factory external speaker wouldn't cure.

I have that same setup that your son in law has. Mine has been peaked and tuned too it has a 7 amp power supply in it and
swings between 25 to 30 watts. The receive is out of this world too. The only thing I don't like is with that mic it have talk back
that I can't turn off. But I love the radio had it for about one and half years now.

dough boy, i think that one of those internal adjustments that are threw the little holes in the back is , one of them is the talk back and one is the mic gain. i could be wrong to. its not very loud anyhow.

You are right about that. It is turned all the way down and you can still hear it coming out of the speakers. I guess
I will have to live with it like that. :?
