tower take down need hlp please

i have located a 90' tower for 200.00 and i must take it down.

it is a triangle shaped (dont know the brand yet) wit z brackets in the tower sections
20' sections. and 2 sets of guy wires. small antenna on top ( not trying to salvage the antenna)
close to a house (sinlge story) and a large tree

i need some suggestions on how to take it down

is there any way to do this without getting a crane?
can it be done from the ground or say on top of the house?


looking for any inside information or tricks of the trade that will help

It's a section of pipe with a pulley on one end with rope you
bolt it to the section of tower below the one you want to take down
unbolt that section someone on the ground pulls that section out and
lowers to the ground and keep working your way down. After you get
down to about 20 or 30 feet you'll be able to lean the tower over. You
also erect the tower by doing it in reverse.

I believe there is a commercial company in Kennedale, on Bus 287, that will do it (for a price). If you have no other options, I can try and drive down that way and get the info off their sign.

I agree with monkey, you should be getting the tower free for taking it down. I've never heard of anyone charging especially $200 you could buy one brand new on the ground for that, no doubt about it!

I can buy Rohn 25G Z bar tower sections all day for $20 per 10 ft section.

9 sections = $180 already disassembled and ready to go with hardware.

I'd pass on this offer unless you did it for free. If he is wanting to get rid of it, no one is going to pay for it.

Used, but in good condition. I wouldn't buy rusty junk, nor have it for that matter.

Think about this. I'm not sure about the whole state, but every part near me in the state of Kentucky has satellite TV, but no cable TV. Almost every house has a tower. Free for the taking with most of them that have a satellite dish on the side of their houses. Paying high dollar for tower is crazy. I bought 2 new sections this one time. They were about $100 each. I could have bought a 100 ft tower for the same price in good condition.

So many bases out there too set them up, and get tired of them, and want to dump the whole package. If you have the money, but it up, sit on it, and sell it at higher prices. I've done this a couple of times.

Thanks hobbz, I figured it was for used but wanted to make sure. I have been lucky to run across several 25 ft towers I was able to get for free. Just had to take them down, which was easy with a bit of manpower and a sawzall. I should be able to put the two together and get a taller tower out of the deal.

Ranger, at 90ft. you don't bounce, you hit like a sack of potatoes. I would be very cautious about taking down something this high.

easy way out : drop it like a tree and keep the sections that survive. youll probably get 100$ for the rest of the bent aluminum at a scrapyard. . be sure to yell "timber" when it falls. but seriously i have seen towers on ebay that you have to take down yourself, its not totally uncommon. paying someone to take it down then listing it adds alot of $ to the price. 2zero9

Unfortunately, most towers are galvanized and not aluminum. While aluminum would be worth scrapping for money, galvanized steel is not. Most scrap yards will give you like half a penny a pound for galvanized metal.

How do I know this? We own a gutter company and install aluminum gutter and take the scrap to the scrap yard. Old gutters are galvanized and we take them off old houses to replace them with aluminum. We usually just throw the galvanized away b/c it's not worth the gas money of taking it to the yard.

this is a used steel 80' (looked at it today) z bar in good shape

i agree that leaning toward caution is the best way and i really dont want to climb a tower

as far as the price its what i have been able to find so far
i am not committed to this purchase

i appreciate all of the feed back and opinions thats why i posted here
to get feed back from the forum to see whats fair and workable

and i am still looking for a great deal so if any one knows of a 60 to 80 foot tower in north texas area
please let me know i will travel to get it

a follow up to the tower saga


I have located and purchased a 50' free standing tower with a rotor AND a MOONRAKER 4 in tack and in good shape..

will be taking it down this weekend (with drafted help from the buddies) and relocating it to my place.

Doubt if it will be up for the DX FEST weekend but you never know.

also have a RCI-2980WX base in the box on the floor.

I have a question for the tower antenna guru's
I want to run a ground plane for local tx/rx on top of the Moon raker extend the pole up above it for the solarcon
any ideas or feed back is appreciated
