Re: RCI 2995DX?
If your looking to grow into a rig go buy a HF rig and be done with it. You will have many more bands to go to vs. a 10-12 meter rig that cost almost as much as a decent HF rig. Thats my opinion im sure others will follow with their opinions.ODD CARNAGE wrote:I AM NEW TO THE RADIO WORLD,AND HAVE A TEC TICKET,AND PLAN TO GET THE GENERAL NEXT.MY QUESTION IS WAS THIS A GOOD RADIO TO PURCHASE FOR MY FIRST RADIO? great radio......just very limited for ''amateur'' use......has only 2 amateur bands....10 and 12 meter.......great for cb use
i know they are pricey but......you should have looked into a multi band transmitter as 10 and 12 meter are propagation bands ........ie skip is when they are active
ic-706mkiig
ft-100 or 100d
ft-897
ft-847
ft-897d
ft-8900r
ts-2000
ts-2000x
these are better options for wide band usage....and upgrade liscening

Hey OC,
Yeah I'll agree with the Zinger on this one. I'm a ham also and an 11 meter op for 30 years.
The 2995DX is their top of the line base and will run you at around $700. you'll get only 12,11& 10 meters out of it.
For a base, get a ham HF rig. You'll have all the bands and 100 watts on sideband & FM. If you get and Icom, they'll do close to 50 watts on AM and swing to 90-100 watts. I have an Icom 746 which is HF + VHF, so it has all of HF plus 6 meters plus 2 meters all in one radio. Sounds great on AM so I use it as my CB base station too.
If you also want a mobile, the RCI 2950DX or 2970DX work great and you have a really nice 12,11 & 10 meter all mode mobile. Can't go wrong.
good luck!

Interesting, I don't know if its a legal deal or what, as I've been licensed a long time, but I did get my first hf rig before I was licensed, but it wasn't a general coverage rig. I figured they always ask for the call to have you on their mailing list. I do know that they require proof if you request the 10/12 meter mod for an amp, and I'd never request a mars/cap mod. As dead is their deal is, I'd think dead presidents would be the only ID they'd need. I know you mentioned bare bones rigs, but if you think you might be interested in any upper band action, you might want to spend a little more and get something with vhf/uhf. Another benefit to the real ham rig is that they have a key circuit so when you go up in the wattage department, you can easily run a nice ameritron or whatever and not have to come up with a keying mechanism. The 2995 looks nice but that's a lot of cash for that bit of quality and ability. -drdx
