Bleeding on the neighbors TV

#149394

Post by gun runner »

I am running A Cherokee CBS 500 and A Thunder bolt 305 , my station is doing about 650 watts , I'm running all this into A antron 99 about 50 ft at the bottom of the antenna . How is it possible to tear up the neighbors TVs and not affect none of mine at all . The DK on my Cherokee is 8 watts , now I know that is to high for the box , but I'm currently waiting on my power supply for my other radio , but could this be the reason for the bleeding ?

Well, my guess would be the radiation pattern is effecting your neighbors television. Also, is that a class C box your running (which may have less then desired filtering inside of it)? Those are two things that I could think of right off the top of my head..............

They live in A dbl wide trailer about 100 ft from my antenna , and the main TV that I bleed on is A very expensive TV , I would think it had good filtering . I'm not sure what class box the thunderbolt is , its an old tuber .

Thanks again 500 , would it be OK to put the choke tube right at the back of my amp in between the amp and TVI filter ,or does it have to go at the feed point of my antron ?

I didnt adjust the modulation on my radio nor do I have A mic gain adjustment to try and turn down . But I also thought it may be over modulating A tad and making it bleed on the TVs . But that wont be A problem in A few days my new radio has lots of knobs .

put directly behind the tvi filter.........after testing.......it is not necessary to be at the feedpoint for it to work....

a bud of mine has them last in line....2 of them....one vert coax..one horz coax after ant switch....sitting on ground right outside his shack........work great

I went back & looked at your previous question about how much you can drive that amp.
I believe that amp is 1 sweep tube driving 3 sweep tubes, the 6LQ6.

reading from the RF parts website:
Amplifying "AM" signals can overheat tubes due to their low power dissipation. When using sweep tubes, care should be taken to limit carrier level to about 50 watts output per tube (6LQ6, 6LF6, 6JE6, 6HF5, 6JS6C, etc.). SSB P.E.P. can operate at about 70 watts P.E.P. per tube. Exceeding these power levels will rapidly reduce tube life.

So i'm not sure how you're able to get 650 watts from 3 sweep tubes, but it might be overdriving them just a tad.
Good judgment says to back off the drive level to no more than 300 watts deadkey out from amplifier.
Maybe even thats too much, those tubes have not been manufactured in quite some time. Difficult to replace.

As far as the TVI, the higher drive level might be causing harmonics to fall onto TV channels.
Tune your own TV to the same channel your neighbor is having trouble on.

I changed my radio out tonight . I put A Magnum M1 in line with A 3 watt DK . I dropped my DK down on the box to about 50 watts and let it swing to about 100 watts , and it is still barely coming over the neighbors TV . I also tried to throw A choke tube together last night , but I didn't talk on the radio at all because it made my SWR shoot up to 2.5 .

Now maybe I can have a base station on the air after all. These Baluns seem to do the job quite nicely!

Dang choke tube doesn't do anything but make my swr go up . Am I doing something wrong ? I took about 30 ft of coax , wrapped it around A kentwood water bottle and put it in line in between my amp and TVI filter .

Just get a new ground-plane based antenna. A-99's are known to cause these issues.

The RF Chokes (Baluns) that I have read about on various sites seem to vary in length of coax used and diameter of the loops depending on the frequencies it is "designed" for. I have had excellent luck with my own base station (and several of the locals) by making a choke that is 6 to 8 loops and 1' in diameter. The loops need to be side by side (not overlapping) and the choke needs to be as close to the feed point (base) of the antenna as possible. This way it traps the RF at the base of the antenna before it can travel back down the coax and create interference. This is of course on the pretense that the RF is being caused by common mode current and not because of the radiation pattern of the antenna. Plastic wire ties work great for holding the loops together and for mounting it to the mast. Electrical tape will also work, but doesn't stand up to the weather as good...

Thanks guys , Ive got A set of shooting star 4 element beams sitting on the porch . Just waiting on some dry weather to start putting them together . So hopefully when I get them up Ill know if the bleeding problem is caused from my antenna or from my radio equipment . I havent gave up on the choke tube idea yet I'm still piddling with that .

If the balun made your SWR shoot up, you have one of two issues.

1. There was a mistake made in the manufacture of the balun.

Or.

2. You had considerable common mode current on the feed line that was giving you an incorrect SWR reading all along, and the balun eliminated it.

My bet is on #2.

RUN A 2 INCH COPPER STRAP FROM THE ANTENNA TO THE GROUND CONNECTED TO 2 EIGHT FOOT GROUND RODS AND MOST OF YOUR TVI WILL GO AWAY. IT IS EXPENSIVE BUT I AM A BELIEVER IN IT. ALSO USE HIGH QUALITY COAX.
