Alright guys...let me know what you think....I just picked this RCI-2980WX up this morning from CB City and came home and just put it in line. I've always wanted a big base radio and I think this one is a little step up from my PRO510xl... Can't wait to get a FATBOY behind this thing....hopefully just in time for the skip season. Well, here she is:

yeah, i have owned two of the old palomar 2-pill boxes with the 1446s in them, so i am familiar with it. i got around 170 out of those boxes, so i figure somewhere 300+ should work for me. the sponsors on here say the will do 500+ watts...but i guess i am a realist. anyway, 300 watts compared to the about 30 watts i am doing now should pump it up nicely.

yeah, i have always used mobiles to for the versatility...if you get tired of them on base...just slap it in the mobile....plus, more people are likely to buy a mobile from you than a base. but, i finally broke down and got a real base so my kids didnt have to be embarrased at school.

Way to go! From a PRO510xl to a RCI-2980WX is a little step up for sure. About like going from a bicycle to a Cadillac.

I used to be a mainly mobile CB'er, but now the way my life is arranged, I'm either at work or at home. I'm still working on setting up a nice base.

I'm looking at a Galaxy 2527, that's the ultimate base for me.

RCI's are about the best radio you can buy. That one sure is looking good sitting there.

I know you'll love that radio. I'm all for RCI 29** series radios. There's no other "CB" or "10m" radio that compares.

way to go BG. looks great. just slide that bad boy over to the left, or right i guess and put that fat boy in there. get ya a big three panel dosy meter or somethin in there and youll be set. what kind of wattage are ys seeing out of that 2980 from cb city. mine does about 40 to 43 watts pep on am or ssb. youll really like that fat boy base. its plenty of power for skip shooting. you wont rule the super bowl but i dont listen to that stuff anyhow. i just use the super bowl for a skip guage.

Heck, when skip is coming in you don't need an amplifier.

That all depends. If you're hitting someone, say S-5, with 30 watts, 300 watts will only raise you about 6 1/2. That's not bad, I guess, but it isn't enough to make or break a conversation.

Good radio choice, BG. 8) They are (imo) one of the better base radios on the market. I'm sure you will be happy with it. :)

I don't go to the "bowl." I either do SSB on 35 or higher...or AM on channels below 1.

But since a great number of people on the "bowl" are running power and probably more than 300 watts, an amplifier really won't make that much of a difference. I'm not saying don't get one. But they aren't the cure all that some people think they are.

Funny you say that about the "BOWL" Busman. I do the same thing. Turn on the cb, flip over to ch 6 to check skip conditions and then go to my local station. Channel 6 makes a great skip gauge and thats about all it's good for. :D BG thats on heck of a radio man. I envy you! I run the little brother to that beast, an RCI 2950dx. RCI 29 series are excellent radios. You should REALLY enjoy that one! Have fun, and as I say "TALK ON IT!"
