Check with one of our sponsors to see if they can mod that radio to do what you are wanting. I see no reason why it cannot be improved if it has already been converted to 11m.

I have a Ft-857d.. It will never sound Like a Cb on AM... It will sound ok.. but not like a CB... For me I was able to make it sound alright... You have to hold the power button and the front 3 ABC buttons and will be able to access a menu to adjust AM RF... Item 65 in the menu.. I set mine at 96.. Which will give it some forward swing.. Factory Preset is 138.. And run the AM Mic Gain down.. I hope this Helps

I'm not a tech, but there's probably not much you can do if the modulation is turned all the way up on the inside and the mic gain is turned all the way up.

For AM these radios just aren't very good, as you know, but for SSB, that's a different matter.

The 857 is awesome!!!!!!!!!! I love this radio because it has everything in a small package. As you know if you just got your ticket, your HF capabilities are limited, but fortunately the ft-857 has 6 meter , 2 meter, and 70 cent. where I've found lots of activity, and repeaters and fun!!!!!!!!! I use mine as base and I take it mobile. I get nothing but great reports from everywhere, ( except 11 meter am, where it's not supposed to work anyway) I would recommend this radio to my mother!!!!

I have the big brother of the 857 ,the 897 .It has the same board inside with same functions. But it's portable ,with possibility off build in the power supply and or power-pack.
I use it on the 11M(FM,SSB),PMR(UHF), some pirate bands 21M,45M and 86M band and listen to some HAM freq.

For a lot of more info for the 857 u can read also on the 897 forum of yahoo [Please login or register to view this link]

LOL, what is it with this site, censoring every other word!
I like this site, but the sponsor sucking limit its true potential, taking away all the free speech.

Anyway, back on topic, my friends 747 used 1 am carrier and only 1 sideband (Usb!), lol. In case you didn't know AM uses both Carrier, and both sidebands. It was hopeless, the radio would no matter what you did, get good sound on AM!

Are you talking about receive audio?
maybe you have the DSP on, turn it off or adjust it to not be so constrictive.

Are you talking about transmit audio?
This model radio is used often in japan, which is why they put a "tone" switch on the back of the microphone.
Use position "2" if you are speaking english. "1" is for japanese, where they need more bass audio response for that language.
If you use postion 1, you might sound muffled. This is covered in the manual under AM/SSB transmitter operation.

You also want to use the PROC speech processor. This is on menu row C.
Use a setting of 30 or so. Enabling this may have more effect than the tone switch on the microphone.
But with both, you should sound just fine. This speech processor is covered in the same section in the user manual.
Also make sure you don't see DSP on the display when transmitting, because this could further constrict your audio.

I appreciate the responses, I was referring to TX, for clarification, I'll try it again tomorrow, and see if I get anything better, Just a pain in the butt to have to change it back when I go back to SSB or FM or where ever!!
I still have all my CB gear so my Cobra 2000 sounds great on 11 meter!!! I was just trying to use 1 radio for everything!
