Looking at Galaxy dx2517 with new mosfets

Anyone have the galaxy dx 2517, Its supose to have a new board or something they improved on. I know some of them drifted on ssb. I was pricing them & also the rci 2980wx. Would you recommend a surface mount board or the old school main board which are easier to work on. Everyones thoughts welcome.

Well, Ive had 2517 about 2 mos. now and I love it!!!Im gonna go get my 2x6 Davemade base on Saturday and cant wait!!!!!Right now,I have a skywalker 1x2.Quackshack did an awesome job on the tune and requested a low dead key of 1 watt on the low side of the variable.

The older Galaxy's would drift on SSB I hear, but I have not heard of that happening with any of the current generation. I run a DX95T2 as my base station and it's solid on frequency once it's up to operating temp.

Personally I prefer the "through the board" type boards as I can actually work on them myself...I have no experience with the surface mount types.

i had a 2917 for a few months. the radio was awesume in every respect except-the recieve audio quality was dissapointing. it had a harsh gritty sound to it. even the texas star ex speaker did little to help-i sold it

The Galaxy 2517 the only new thing is the Mosfet Finals.As far as I know its not a SMT Board yet.I would stay away from the SMT Boards I did see one thing that was funny on the SMT boards a 2995DX someone tried to do a mod and soldered a diode onto a surface mount part to do some kind of swing mod but only made the radio sound like crap on SSB.I dont know of any CB Shops that have invested in the equipment to work on SMT radios yet.I had a 2517 and it was a good radio did some mods to the RX and made it sound really nice.You wont be sorry on the 2517.

Thanks silver streak for the info, Thats probably my decision also cause of the smt board. Ranger has nice bases but its got the new board & i don't have anyone to fix them but me & rather stick to the the old school.

There is an adjustment to radios that use that board...I did it to my 95T2 and it removed about 80-90 percent of that gritty noise you mention and now stations or transmissions that were below the noise are above it and the radio is extremely quiet. I will include it in this post for those that have not seen it..It's just an adjustment--not a modification posted on another forum by Ray from Galaxy.

One difference in the receiver section of our four new radios using the EPT690010Z/C boards is the addition of an extra FET in the receiver front end. While this added FET is partially responsible for increased receiver sensitivity it can also cause the receiver to be excessively noisy if tuning coil L8 is not adjusted properly. I have found during alignment that tuning L8 for a peak reading on the s-meter is not always the best method because this can increase the noise floor or sometimes called "hash" sound in a receiver. This is when a good signal generator and scope can really help but for those out there that don't have that luxury then simply tune L8 for a peak reading on the s-meter like normal. Now remove the antenna connector from the radio and then continue adjusting the core of L8 approx. 1/4 to 1/2 turn clockwise just until you hear the noise floor drop slightly. You may need to crank the volume control up for this last step.


Before you "de-sensitize", tuning L-8, get a fixed signal reading from another known station, do the tune, have them throw you a dead key, and just reset VR-1 (the 95-T's AM Meter adj.) to the original S reading you had before. Check on CBTricks.com for other model #'s to be sure....(Use non-conductive alignment tools, please!)

The sweet spot for me was just a hair past 1/4 turn

Sheesh--it's only turning one pot till your S meter is at max and then turning it approximately 1/4 turn more clockwise..Can't get any simpler than that. Plus--here's the benefit-- it gets you 80-90% less background noise so you can really pull in those distant mudducks.

i had a galaxy dx 2517 for a couple years then got to looking at the galaxgy 88 and was like hey this is the basically the same and the base and was cheaper. so i sold the base and got the 88 so i could use it in the house or the truck. I remember the SSB drifting as well on my 2517.

Yep--everybody says the older Galaxy's drifted. The new ones don't drift any more...at least my 95T2 doesn't. Turn it on and it stabilizes in the first 10 minutes or so and then stays put.

I have also the new galaxy 2517.After ten minutes the radio solid rock at the frequency.It's never tends to drift. :D
