General Lee base set up question

#161994

Post by Chester »

Hi everybody, I just finished up installing an A-99 antenna on the house and hooked up a GL for my son to talk on, my SWR is 1:1.2 and 1:1.4, so I,m satisfied with that. I could get it closer but it got dark and I'm tired of climbing up the roof for today. Heres the problem, we tested all 40 channels and they all come in clear as a bell, but channels 24 thru 29 are garbled, it's like the radio is off frequency. Got any ideas??? All the other channels are perfect. We picked up this radio used. Never had a General Lee, so kinda wondering if I'm doing something wrong. 10k switch is off. Think I shouls send it out and have it checked out??? Any input sure will be appreciated. Thanks Chester I might add "Wow" what a radio!!

It sounds like to me that the radio is picking up some type of electronics that is generating some type of noise on those 2 frequencies. Maybe something in your house, or even your power supply. Try turning everything off in your room you are in, and if that doesn't work, try taking the radio mobile. If the problem goes away, you can narrow it down from there.. Process of elimination.

Sideband users on those freqs. in your area??
Try it with a known AM station and see what gives.

Thanks for the idea,s. I,ll start the process of illimination On these five channels I can bearly make out any transmitt , outside the house in my mobile . All the other channels he barrels right thru. He (my son) can,t hear me on these channels as well. I have him start turning everything off. X-box etc . We,ll see what happens.

That is a weird situation. I've personally never heard of just a few channels being out of whack. Seems like an interference problem like the other posters stated though. Keep trying to remove different possible sources of rf interference though. You may discover what it was by accident!
This is Unit199 and I just got down..

Ok, I think I'm on to something here, upon further "checking things out" A friend of mine pointed out that the coax I was given is not copper, evidently RG58, comes in different types. I have experienced bleed thru into my TV, computer speakers etc. So I am going to get the proper coax for this application, I have read some of the other threads about coax cable for base station applications. As usual hast makes waste,. The radio does get out as far as TX/RX. Do you guys think I will harm anything until I get the coax changed out??? I,m running this set-up barefoot. Also I am open to coax recommendations. Figure I,ll fix the obvious and press on from there. I never set up a CB for base before. Thanks

If it has RG58 or RG8 or compatible coax you should be fine if its RG59 or RG6 stop talking till you get the right stuff.

I would say it's electronic interference. I catch it locally all the time but as I move around town it will get quieter. If it's just on 3 to 4 channels consider yourself lucky.

Thanks for all the tips, The problem with the channels (24 thru29) seems to be the switch on the radio, when we click back and forth, from say 26 to 27 and back to26, then it comes thru clearly. I've never looked inside but it seems to be a dirty channel switch or reostate type of thing. The radio had been setting for some time before we bought it. I don,t want to spray anything in there, mainly because I don,t know what I,m doing. May send this GL out to be checked out and set up. The coax I,m using is RG58, but it has silver shielding and a silver colored center, could be aluminum wire ??? At any rate I think copper wire has better shielding properties ? Correct me if I'm wrong. I guess we are just working out the bugs, we are getting out about 20 + miles right now, in our mountainous area , that's not too bad. Thanks for the help. Chester
