I am looking for a used base radio but do not know anything about them.
And as far as a antenna ill but one and make a small tower for the roof of my house.
I need help on what is a good radio because i do not want to be stuck with a pile.
This is what i have now it is a cobra 29 ltd chrome and a power supply and a homemade

What all do you want to do with it? Do you use AM only or will you like to dip around with SSB from time to time?

I'm partial to the Cobra 2000 GTL base unit. They're no longer made, however - not since 1994 or so. You can get a great used one and use that. If you want a new radio and want to stay with a legal radio, a Texas Ranger TR696SSB or a Galaxy 2547 would be good choices - however the 2000 is a little better quality (if older).

If you want more, there are 10m base radios that you can buy, although out here in Arizona, people seem to like full blown ham radios (Yaesu, various models and Kenwood 430 / 930).

No i do not have a base amp just the radio.And as Far as ssb i have never herd anyone
on it were i live so i don't know if it would do me any good?
I like the 10 meter idea um just don't know any thing about the base radios.
And i have herd ppl talk about bad power supplies and channel knobs i would like to get one that's for sure

I have a cobra 142gtl with a d104 lolipop mic. It works well and i get good reports from it....It has extra chanels and variable power. Not a monster radio....swings to 10 watts....but i talk a another base about 30 miles away and he says i am loud and clear....and i didnt just hook up my new galaxy dx33hp with dual mosfet finals.....have them both hooked to the same antenna....i drove 10 miles away and had my dad at home....the 142 was much louder than the brand new 33hp. I would sell the base....make me a offer...

The 29 is a great radio, dont know if youve had yours tuned up or not, but they are very good radios. You could get yourself some good coax, and a good base antenna (A99,MAX2000, 5/8, etc) and be in business.

I have the exact same radio, hooked to a radio shack power supply, and matched to an A-99 on a push-up pole outside my bedroom window, and I love it. I live right beside I-40 and can talk to the truckers sometimes as far as 15 miles away barefoot. My Cobra 29 has been peaked and tuned, and had the swing mod done. I'm sure I could get out farther if I'd get the antenna higher, but right now the bottom of the antenna is only a couple of feet above the peak of my roof. I just haven't had the desire to mess with guy wires (which would be essential in the wind we have here in the plains), so I haven't raised it any higher yet. That's it tho, no amp, cuz my neighbor's satellite dish is but about 30 ft. from my A-99, and I do NOT want the hassle of dealing with bleed-over.
I don't know your situation, but this setup makes me happy. It's a simple, fairly cheap, very no-hassle setup. It leaves room for improvement down the road, which kinda keeps my interest up..........thinkin' about raising the antenna and such. You know what they say "It's not the destination, it's the journey........" :D
