MaCo V-Quad vs A99

#165827

Post by 49 »

I often set up a A-99 on a 14-21ft push up pole. This is at my home(hmo rules) as well as mobile on occasion. I'm looking to improve signal for dx and was thinking of the maco v-quad. It says its about 8 lbs and that should work at the heights I use. Dont want to change antenna for only a minimum gain. Some say I might only get a 1 S unit improvement. If I can get a 1 or more S unit gain then I think it may be worth it.

Anyone have any real use with this antenna? And I know that a multi element yagi is better but I have very limited conditions to work with.

I've vote none of the above. If you want portable like you've been using, consider going with an Imax and/or throw up a dipole antenna (either wire or not) on the horizontal during DX. Both will be alot more forgiving to the install/take down over time IMO. The V-Quad and 5/8's are designed more for permanent installations.

Just a couple of thoughts.

I cant see how setting up a dipole can be easier and produce more gain than the A99 on a 20ft pole? I would have to look for an area with trees etc to string one up. And if I did it would only be about 15ft up or so.

The A99 already has gain over a dipole.

Never used the Vquad, but it should have gain over pretty much any omni antenna.

Ever think about a 3 element beam?
Channel 32, or sometimes 33 and or 34......

Believe me if I could have a tower I would have a yagi with a vertical on top however that is not the case. I live in a no antenna area. So it has to be something I an raise on a push up pole and take down when done. The Maco is the smallest, lightest directional I could find but don't want to change from my A99 if there will be minimum results.

Sir

I also live in a homeowners association neighborhood and do you have some pics of the set up you use? I will have to do the same thing or mount the antenna on a chimney mount and only screw in the top part when I am going to use it but it would be better on a hinged base mount at the side of the house that I could just raise up each time I am going to use it. I am curious to see what you have put together and I may do the same thing when I come stateside in november. Let me know if you can post some pics for me and have a good day.
