New ideas for an old radio.

How many of you have a particular base unit that you just flat _like_ no matter how old or whatever? I've always been partial to my Cobra 2000 radios, of which I have had 4 (and still have 2). I decided to kind of update the look of it, well at least customize it into my own. Among things I've done to one of them is to add black decals to the front panel, and change the color of the freq counter/channel LEDs to blue. I think it came out alright -

This gives it, I think, a more modern look. BTW, the knobs were treated and painted with Phantom Gray Metallic paint and baked in a 150 degree F oven for 2 hours to ensure the finish was hard.

Yup, got 2 myself, bought both used. The one plugged in the wall right now smells like the ash tray (looks like one too) but it works great and the price was right. I've been looking at one of those face lift kit to have a makeover hope to remove the smell too.

Killer setup! Love the mods...

I always wanted a 2000GTL, just started recently looking at getting one. Hopefully I'll join you all sometime soon.

Thanks for the compliments guys, this radio was sitting here disassembled for two weeks while I awaited the parts. The LED displays came in the form of a kit that I had to solder together. The guy I got them from also has them preassembled, but since I've been soldering things for 34 years now and I have a temp controlled grounded soldering station, I decided to save the $19 cost of having the preassembled. FWFW, the quality on them is perhaps a little better than the factory stuff - no joke.

Of the two radios I have, one of them was found quite literally in a backyard trash pile (and cost me nothing), the other one I paid $200 for locally. The one here is the trash-pile one. It did require a fair amount of rehabilitation, so it wasn't simply plug-and-play. However, with the work I've put into it (including the mods you see here) I have a radio I am proud of. One I saved from a trash heap.

The $200 one is a Philippines made in 1990 and is in nearly new condition. The one pictured here is a Taiwan radio made in late 1982.
