radio ?

Post by 5H Outlaw »

I've only ever used radios like PC-76/78xls, cobra 25/29s and the like. Trucker stuff. At the risk of sounding foolish, what kind of radio would I need to get into that would still let me talk to my buddies on 19 and what-not but still let me get out into some big skipland? I've had usb/lsb stuff ( Washington base ) but never really used it, and it seems to me that you guys are talking about something else altogether. I hear about the General Lees and Connexs and Magnum stuff, but don't really understand what kind of freqs they cover on what modes.
Sorry for the long winded post but I'm kinda curious now!!

I Agree with that !

General Lee is a 10 meter radio with more output than a standard CB. They are loud and proud out of the box but with an upgrade ( Peak & Tune ) ( Dont let Mr Radio Active hear me say that ! ) SUPER WACK PACK will boost your recieve, transmit and clear up your modulation ( Voice signal ).

Bottom line is a great radio for not much more than a standard CB with more than twice the power.

Well DX out here has been in the toilet for quite awhile (certainly in my neck of the woods)...but make no mistake about it, the antenna system is probably the biggest part of DXin' IMO. Whether you do AM or SSM, without that no amount of radio or amp will get you out there effectively.

Once the antenna system is addressed, the radio and/or amp are the next things. Need enough to punch through to the proper conditions to "skip" or DX. And if you set up for the above, you'll talk local no problem most any time you want.

And don't feel foolish. If you don't ask, you won't know...and IMO we were all there at one point or another. Ask away your questions though. Lots of knowledgable folks here who (IMO) are willing to share their knowledge.

Just my $.02

Thanks for the help. Got an A-99 with gpk going on the roof as soon as the snow melts off, that ought to get me a "hearing aid" with the base. As far as the mobile goes, I think I want to sell the cobra 29 nw st bla bla and get a bigger radio, and this General Lee is starting to sound pretty good.
