RF shielding of S-10 engine computer
RF shielding of S-10 engine computer
I am getting ready to upgrade the grounding on my S-10 pickup to reduce RF problems with the alarm system, and engine computer.
I read that wrapping the computer with copper might help. I was thinking that well grounded magnetic steel, or grounded steel screen (Faraday Cage?) would be better than non-magnetic copper.
My battery, frame, cab, and bed are very well grounded with braided ground cable landed in never-seize. I am about to extend ground jumpers to the hood, and doors.
If the steel screen will work like a Faraday Cage, I was thinking that it would be easy to apply and ground in a few spots.
My mini-8 coax says either 95% shielded or 97% shielded. Is that good enough?

Since I have some experiance with onboard comps I would say a good I dont know about that shielding. car comps are internaly shielded and usualy in an aluminum case so there is not mag field working around. some are encased in polomars as well. I dont think it will hurt to try. It should be self evedent wether or not it works.
Well Mr. RadioActive,
I was running a Boomer 400 that was freaking out my engine computer, radar detector (would give a false laser alarm, go figure?), alarm system, FM stereo, and power locks.
The Boomer is out for tuning and repair, and I am running a loaner Shooting Star 225. Between the smaller amp and lower SWR of the new Mr. Coily, the RF problems are gone for now. I will have to see what happens when the Boomer 400 comes back from repair.

I don't know if this is relevent or not, but the radar detecter issue set off an alarm for me. When I get in my pick up and touch the key ring, if there's static built up ( if I get a static shock ) the radar detecter will give a short burst every time. So I suppose that my point is, maybe you've got a ground fault somewhere that affects your computer etc.
Just something to look at.
