LMR-400 is junk? If you had a problem with it the connectors were probably poorly soldered or shorted.djrebel236 wrote:Ummm, ok go with the HYPE of the lmr400 b.s, that is junk, i bought into the hype and almost ruined mt radio cause of it, if ya want to buy new radios or new finals for it, fine buy the lmr400, money spent well, i recommend the mini8x for his setup or rg213...Dj
What coax should I use?
If you know anything about this forum...............you should know that not everyone wants or needs high quality products. I have been bashed because I thought the same way. Some people want top notch comp amps while others prefer Palomar or KLV amps lower quality amps. I myself run nothing but the best because I have the desire and money to do so.Black Lightning wrote:King Mudduck - you said it better than I could have.
I just don't understand how others can settle for mediocrity. What's insane is just how many people out there that not only settle for it, but try to get others to settle for it as well!
Give it a rest.

I'm curious...what kind of problem did you have? LMR400 is one of the best quality coax available. I know several people using it and none have ever had a problem. I have been using the LMR400UF for quite some time now and have never had a problem. Please...do tell...djrebel236 wrote:Ummm, ok go with the HYPE of the lmr400 b.s, that is junk, i bought into the hype and almost ruined mt radio cause of it, if ya want to buy new radios or new finals for it, fine buy the lmr400, money spent well, i recommend the mini8x for his setup or rg213...Dj
I agree...either that or the coax was damaged (pinched/cut). If you're uncertain of your soldering skills then purchase your coax with the connectors already installed. When I did my first PL259 installation (more years ago then I'll admit to) I screwed up a couple of times (cold solders). I realized the error of my ways and took corrective measures to insure I didn't make the same mistake again. I guess I could have blamed the coax (RG8x) but that would have been too easy... :lol:slydog wrote:If you had a problem with it the connectors were probably poorly soldered or shorted.

Its not really about whether or not you can afford to run the very best equipment or not.
Radio equipment is the same as building a high performance engine. You can buy ten thousand dollars worth of engine parts to go in what ever motor you want but that does not mean your going to see 800HP out of it the first time you turn the wheel on the dyno, it's the same with radios. You may think that buying the very best amp, radio and antenna is all you need to be a DX king but that's not how it works. Proper grounding, antenna placement coax and setup, radio/amp setup and from time to time........ swallowing you pride while listening to others who have more experience than you tell you the right and wrong things to do are everything when it comes to radio just as a good tune on a high power engine is.
In the end it's all about the little things that you do or dont do that will make you a king or a fool!

Hmmm. Quite a ruckus. It was just my opinion to Runaway. You can all give your own opinions.
I didn't think my suggestion was "insane", "foolish", "inefficient", "cheap", or "mediocre".
I based my answer to Runaway on different levels. Number one being the setup will work with great efficiency with rg8x on a 50' run. Also took into account that it sounds like his first base set-up, and if so, like most of us, he'll want to get the antenna higher at a future date. So now...what to do with that fat 213 or 9913 or 400lmr. Whereas the 50/60 ft of rg8x serves real good in the shack for patch cords for meters, tvi filters, etc..... no waste (being thrifty isn't being "cheap", "foolish", or "insane"). If his run was sufficiently longer, I would have suggested otherwise. My stations run is 230ft to a antenna on a hill in my backyard. It's fed with International 9913type.... not "cheap or mediocre" at all.
We're all entitled to our opinions.....don't knock mine. I gave good advice as everyone else did. Runaway sounds like he can choose for himself.
