yes..a vehicle make and all would be very helpful...as these newer "electronic" vehicles require more power to function and properly operate the "ecm"..
from experience with the otr trucking industry (mechanic for otr trucks) any additions you apply to a vehicle that uses power shortens the life of batteries and alternators... and honestly that is why when the trucks are "lit up like a christmas tree" i change more batteries and alternators than those with more factory and required lights..
and from a personal point of view...i wouldnt add anything requiring more than 60% of your alternator output..i do this on my "db drag" stereo in my pickup.. and have only been through 1 alternator in 3 years... but i have a 160 amp alternator...and stereo is pulling 60..
(ex. alternator charge 100 amps..... don't install any other accessories pulling more than 60 amps peak)
just a personal preference...

Hey cut the **Censored** and answer the question honestly or don't answer it at all, you are not running a 8 pill box off a 65 amp alternator and seeing those numbers and it don't matter what kind of vehicle it is either, you must of thought that 3 was a 8 and you were using a cheesy meter seeing those numbers or to many beers but lets get real here and wake up and think about it as you can tell by your answer you have never run a Amplifier before when you answer questions like that. The guy asked a question and expects a honest answer and deserves a better one than he got anyway. That would be the **Censored** if he went out and hooked up a 8 pill to his new ride and toasted something after reading a answer like that, I see this more and more all the time there is nothing wrong with wanting to help someone out and nothing wrong either with little or no experience we all were there at one time but we all learn more from reading honest answers than ones like this, when people read **Censored** like this and than go and answer other questions based on what they read it won't be long before a bunch of bad advise starts floating around just from one post and I understand most people with any kind of experience would read this and just move on and back on out and never say a word but that is why we are seeing more and more of this and that is what makes a bad Forum.
I just had to get it out there, Sorry enjoy and have fun but don't go hook up a 8 pill box with those kind of amps.

I don't know about some of the other replies you got but 2x4 is about all you should go. The alternator has to run not only the amp but the truck too! The 2x6 amp will work with a 136 amp alternator and an extra battery, but you will get significant voltage drop. I had my stock Ford alternator built up to a 225 amp which is OK for a 2x6 but not an 8.
One of the sponsors is Motor City Reman and they built mine and it does every bit of what they say it does.
The truck itself needs 40 amps minimum to function and with the 136 that limits your choices........well maybe limit to a certain degree, a 2x4 is still some serious stuff!

An 8 pill can and will run off a 65 amp alternator but it might drop the voltage to 9 volts and do 1/2 the watts that it should but it will key up and run! :D

Figure out what your long term goals for a mobile are. You'll waste money buying small and then upgrading amps if you get in a hurry. You need to figure, ballpark, 10 amps per 100 watts of output for the amp draw. Another factory on amperage capacity is how you run it. Lets say you have 60 amps in reserve now, so that's in the 600 watt range, safely. If you run a lower carrier (deadkey) you may be able to get away with a little more, but there is a price for pushing it. If you know that you'll end up with something much larger than your system will currently handle, upgrade the alternator, or add another, and do it right. If that's the case and you are on a budget, plan on getting a good driver amp now and upgrading the electrical down the road as far as a bigger or 2nd alt.
Or.......get that big box now and roll back your drive level to accomodate the electrical until you get it all dialed in. Maybe do that and add a 2nd battery located right at the amp(to cushion the system and minimize voltage drop) and use large #2 or better wire going to it. Overkill for now? Maybe, but doing something once is always cheaper. You're already running the best mobile antenna out there, so I'm thinking you're big radio minded already. Run good coax as well.

To me that is not running not running a 8 pill on 65 amps, buy a box that will run on 65 amps than. I don't know anyone who would buy a 8 pill to run on 65 amps and only 1/2 the watts, come on think about it. Please don't say you do. I through with this subject I don't want to even go there and ruin my day. Have at it.

If he can run an 8 pill on a 65 amp alternator then with my 225 amp I should have no problem running a 32 pill.Darrin wrote:To me that is not running not running a 8 pill on 65 amps, buy a box that will run on 65 amps than. If you try to run an 8 pill that draws 180 amps on a 65 amp alt. your vehicle will shut down almost as soon as you key it up if not instantly.
My advice to anyone wanting to run any big comp. box(davemade,worldwide,fatboy,x-force,cookie built skullcracka, etc.) is to run a second charging system in the vehicle with its own battery bank to pull off of so you dont fry your cars computer with voltage drops and spikes. As far as what size alternator to run? in my eyes you find out how many amps that box will pull and install an alternator rated at least 50 amps over what the box will demand. 8 pill buy a 250 12 pill buy a 300 16 pill have at least 1 300 and 1 250 I myself went with 2 300's with variable regulators for my 16 pill and then I went with a 250 internally regulated for my 5 pill so that when I upgrade to a 24 that 250 can supply the 2x6 driver at a steady 13.8 I can volt my 16 now and the 24 eventually with the 2 300's having external regulators. Do it right once or do it over 10 times. 73's
