I found a solution to my ball mount problems

Gentlemen,

A few of you already know that I found out how bad the hustler ball mount is about two seconds after I drilled holes in the side of my 1991 Jeep YJ. Well the ball mount finally came loose and It was time for a fix. My biggest concern was the holes I had drilled and whether or not a different ball mount would fit in those same holes.

I originally thought of sharpening the teeth on the portion of the mount that grabs the base. But, when I took it apart I found that the bolt that goes through the center was stripped. Man I was irritated. On a whim i went to Rat shack and purchased their ball mount. Most of you know how cheesy the base is on that mount. I actually like the base on the Hustler. So, I decided to mix and match the good parts of each design. I used the base of the Hustler and the ball of the Rat Shack and came up with a little tutorial on how I made it happen.

First, I noted that the RS ball does not fit the ridges of the Hustler base. I took the base to my belt sander and flattened it out. This also allows the shorter bolt of the RS ball to fit.

Then I drilled and tapped a hole in the base to install a set screw. I applied epoxy then attached the set screw. Afterward I made a gasket to go between the base and the ball out of that cheapo rubber that was on the inside of the Hustler ball. I still dont know what Hustler put it in there for...

Next I installed the ball half and bolted it down tight. The set screw prevents it from rotating on the base.
Then I put a few drops of serious loctite on each half of the ball where they join. to prevent the ball from rotating under stress.

Finally, a pic of my CB installed trucker style along with my speaker and mic on a roll cage mount that I fabricated and had powdercoated. the whole crossbar is removable and is bolted through the main roll bar. It is made of 18 gauge sheet metal and 1 3/4 inch DOM tubing.

Ditto on that! I like the speaker facing straight down. Very neat all around.

Thanks guys I appreciate the feedback. Its been a while since I posted and I wanted to make it count. I road tested that ball mount with my 102 on the freeway and it did not budge. It is rock solid.

OK....I might get in trouble for this but I just couldn't pass up the opportunity....athletic supporters and tighter shorts seem to work for me.

Somebody smack me!

Thanks for the replies guys,

Scott41984 Im using RG 213. I thought it would be the only coax I would ever need even if I run power at a later date. I am using 12 feet of it and my SWR is 1.2/1 I got it from one of the sponsors I cant remember now who it was. I know they didnt have it on their website but, if you ask you shall receive.

Causmik... man you're right I should have thought of that LOL. (note: except the tighter shorts).
