How can I get a 'half decent' antenna setup?

Hi all;

I'm new to this forum. I've got a mobile, but don't have a base station yet. I have a Cobra 139 that I bought used that I'd like to set up. I don't know if I want to put up a tower just yet (not even sure if local bylaws allow it), but I'd like to get something going. I was looking at a dipole strung up in the attic, but I was wondering if there is a way to put of say an A99 on a simple pole rather than a tower? Is there a kit available for this? I could mount it beside my house and attach it to the house with a bracket for support even. Would this (if it's possible) work better than a dipole, or would I not even notice the difference? I'm not planning on running any amps etc. at this time.

head down to Lowes or Home Depot they should have whats called a push up pole
i think its in 36 footer when fully extended but you push up and tighten down just what you want sticking in the air
also can get a tripod roofmount put a 10 to 15 foot pole then the antron on top of that

make sure you use guy wires to hold the antenna

when putting the antenna up be careful to watch for power lines
it will kill you.

coax use something like lmr 400 or 213 coax
gives real good sheilding and power handling
cuts down on future bleedover into neighbors and less noise on your recieve

I want to avoid using guy wires if possible, so if I just keep it low can I get away with just fastening it to the house at the roof line?

you can attach it to the roof line
if the pipe is thick enough you can get up around 10 to 15 foot without to much bend
