I think you'll be off to a good start! An Antron 99 can be had for about $45 new plus shipping and an Imax 2000 can be had for probably $85 plus shipping. You can put it on a piece of pipe or a push up pole that you can get at most big hardware stores. As far as radio's is concerned, you really just have to decide if you want an radio with a built in power supply or not. As far as older rigs with a power supply, it's hard to beat a good Cobra 2000, but if you consider going newer, you can probably get a nice RCI/Galaxy base radio for about the same dough. I always preferred to go mobile radio with power supply. I keep a heavy duty 40a power supply on the floor, and it's nice to have less desk being taken up. I ran a Cobra 148 GTL for a long long time on the base, and finally sold it and upgraded to a RCI 2950. There's lots of options/roads you can take, but it really does depend on if you want a full size base radio or a mobile and power supply.

I started my "little" base and it has become as bad of a habbit as my mobile!!! I would look at one of the Cobras that circuitbreaker has listed. Not a steal but not bad for a good radio. I have a old Washington and a 148 mobile set up with two antennas. I developed a need to listen to more than one channel on my base station! Think I may add another antenna and plug up the old Navajo for a third.

Good luck and have fun!
