Another SWR question

#19533

Post by Mississippifrog »

Does this sound right? My setup is in this order.Radio, amp, meter and antenna. With the amp on I'm getting a SWR reading of 1.75 on channel 1 and 2.25 on channel 40.Is this acceptable?I was thinking it should be lower. With the amp off the the SWR needle doesn't move...it just kinda sets there and wiggles.Do i need to change something?

Sounds to me like your antenna needs to made a bit shorter...but not sure of your antenna type/brand and location. That plays a huge part in the overall scheme of things IMO. Your items are correct though. Radio > Amp > Meter > Antenna

I typically pull the amp out of line and tune the antenna for minimum SWR throughout the frequencies I intend to run/use it with. With that done, I then install the amp again and check things again. Most of the antennas I use are still under 1.5:1 easily across the channels I'm running the most...which is my personal preferrence.

With the amp out of line i get great numbers. The meter needle sets on 1:1 Its when i hook the amp back up that i get the higher numbers. :06-272:

How old is the amp ? I dont know enough ebout amps, so one of our techs will need to say if that much jump with an amp is normal.

running more than 1.5-2:1 swr into an amp is very bad....

That much I understand, but from what I have seen, everyone says only SWR the radio to antenna. So the real question is, Is it normal for the amp to show higher SWR, Does it confuse the reading and thats why you check with the radio, or is there a problem with the amp.

Check the SWR with the amp turned off. Yes, the amp will make the meter read differently. What you're tuning on the antenna is the matching of the feedpoint impedence to the impedence of the coax, and thus the radio.

Here's another question while we are on this subject.

If I hook up a different radio to my antenna/coax setup (already in place), Would the swr reading be the same for both radios?
