I'm gonna get my ham license, and gonna put a scanner in my truck also. was wondering if could put a 102" whip on my bumper for a scanner antenna. Wondered if it would work. Thanks

It will work. Not as well as an antenna designed for the frequency you're listening to, but it would work. You'd probably be better off getting a 2M/70cm dual band antenna. Since most comms that you're likely to listen to take place in the 150, 450 and 800 MHz band, this type of antenna would probably work better. 150 MHz isn't that much higher than 2M (144-148 MHz) and 450 MHz is just above the 70 cm amateur band (440-450 MHz). 800 MHz is double 400 MHz so the 440 antenna will work well and have some gain on 800.

I agree with Circuit Breaker. Get a 2m/70cm dual band antenna, and when yo get your license, you can use the same antenna for your mobile. If you're wanting to do base operations, then make a Jpole out of copper.

You could always cut that 102 for better performance as well to equal a wavelength in 2m or 70cm. A 2m antenna will also listen to the UHF frequencies, but just won't do it as good as a UHF antenna would.

ok. Cuz planned out how wanted the truck. I have a wilson 5k mag mount now. And was planning on getting a wilson 2m antenna mag moun also. And then have the 102" on the passanger side on the back bumper. My truck looks different from what it does on my avatar. I done up so special pig style black rims with chrome centers. Is there a 2m antenna that is about the size of a 102"??? Thanks for the help
