Loss @300'?

#199948

Post by Okie »

I am going to start putting up my tower next weekend and have to decide where to put it.

I will be using LMR-400 coax. I realize the more coax used, the more loss to your system.

As I am wanting to put the tower at least 200 feet away from the house,I am wondering if there is a significant loss using 300' of LMR-400 vs 100'.

Doesn't look too bad...but you might want to take a look for yourself at the Timewave Calculator. The efficiency is getting down there that's for sure.

Hope that helps.

to help save some coax you can run the coax down one of the guide wires if the anchor is going to be close to the house
instead of running down tower and then along ground then into house

The LMR 400 will do great at CB frequencies or lower. From DC-30mhz it has little loss compared to most other types of coax other than LMR 600 and Andrews Heliax. I run Heliax on most of my tower, but you're looking at $5 or so a ft, plus connectors at $50 each. Now, if you are wanting in the future to run something like a 2 meter ham antenna, then you might reconsider the LMR 400, but even then, it won't be terrible. If you plan on putting a beam in the air, the only thing I would avoid is using the LMR 400 on the beam itself, and use something flexible up there to allow for the antenna turning.
