Just purchased a cobra 89 gtl for the home base just wondering if anyone used this radio and what you thought of it. Somebody said to remove the d-16 to help the audio

not trying to knock what you were told, but clipping a radio just makes them sounds horrible.. you can get 100% modulation with the turn of a pot and never have to worry about over modulation.

when a radio is clipped, yea it might look good on a meter to some those who dont know better it may sound good, but ot someone who knows who a radio should sounds can tell the difference.

i did have one of the cobra 89`s set up in my garage for a while... they are good sounding radios and are pretty tough too..mine took a few unintentional hit while being on the work bench and never had a problem with it

i understand that.. but basically removing it does the same thing... i know you probably know that but just in case.

either way, a simple tune up will do that little radio good..there kind of like a 142, pretty stout radio off the shelf, not made ot havea bunch of mods done to it, but a simple tune will give that little radio a lot more life.

seriously maybe I dont know what a radio is supposed to sound like but I talk to this guy about 20 miles from my house with a cobra 89 (clipped) and tx star 667 and he is probably the best sounding radio in the area IMO not trying to go against the grain here but many people clip and still sound good. Atleast to my untrained ears. Wrong Way

Great radio, the old "cam 89". Nice and reliable. The big thing to fear about wreckless clipping is TVI, especially on a base. If you're in the country, no problem. If in the city, keep it conservative on the tune and make up for it in other ways, like the antenna. Also, if in the city, go ahead and do the antenna right- high, grounded, skip the sloping ground plane kit, maybe a quality filter.

I wish it was the old cam 89 but it isnt it is the 89 gtl it looks like my cam 89 except the gtl is a fourty channel radio. I have a cam 89 only it has a slight problem the af transformer gets hot and a resistor is smoking or getting hot enough to burn coating off it.
