Yeah those were the good days. I remember people putting springs on the screws of the D 104 Desk mic head and making bong sounds when they keyed up. That got old real quick but that Browning Squeals was actually a part error that became a bonus making that a real popular radio brand and REAL BIG $$$s back in the 70's - 80's
I seen others have mentioned the error as well. We had a neighbor whos handle was Alligator who had 1 . I had to listen to that squeal all the time as he was just down the back alley from me. I despised that radio back then
Its not a real radio unless it has tubes and USB/LSB on the front panel ....

Well my childhood dream is coming true next week. My Mark III is coming cant wait! I had the cobras and love them but the sound of a Browning Keying up is truely awesome sound in my book! I cant wait to go back to 1975 also and throw down some serious modulation!

There's a local near me that has one, the first night I heard him, I made the mistake of saying it was squealing, that night I got schooled on the Browning!!

And now like everyone else said, you can't miss'em!!

Personaly, I love the ping and I love the tone, but they are a little pricy for me, and I don't know JACK about tubes!!

It's neat b/c the squeal changes every time you key up a little bit.

Aside from the squeal, most Browning's have the best RX you can buy.

To each their own :)
Actually the best RX is that of the Cobra 2000 and it's Uniden/President Madison.
The Tram D201 and Golden Eagles were fine radios but they are overrated IMO. A classic radio is not necessarily the best.
Not in a million years will a 2000 hold a candle to a Tram nor a Browning!

I forgot to add this in my last post.i wanted to respond to jester's comment about the ..PING...being annoying I think he refered to it... :icon_e_surprised: ..Have you listened to channel 19 at all??..Nothing but a bunch of jack offs using every four letter word in the book.We call them the F troup around here with their echos and their roger beeps and god knows what else. Are you telling me that the little ping that the eagle makes is worst than that bull.^&*(..You have got to be kidding me..Please...They won't put up with it.Put it this way...When I key my bird up they have no choice but to put up with it lol :icon_e_wink:

I LOVE my BROWNING GOLDEN EAGLE MKIII but it can NOT hold a candle to my TRAM D-201(hand wired)for output power, audio,or ears! Nothing wrong with the EAGLE but it's just NOT up to the TRAM tough standards! HEAD TO HEAD the TRAM "KICKS MY BIRDS BUTT"!

An earlier post mentioned a 4 way switch for ping lengths 1 of which was (I shudder to think) no ping "what" a BROWNING with no ping, thats like buying a Mercedes an taking off the emblems,:). I was (and still am) a Browning guy in the mid 70;s (still have my 4 piece mrkll) but recently aquired a D201-A and have taken back all the duragatory things I said back then, one h"ll of a radio. now have 2 D201-A's, and a mrklll, another tuber from that era that is every bit as good a performer but not as glamorous was the Sonar FS-23 of which I have 2 also. When playing with 40 year old stuff you'd better have spares. By the way I need power cords for a Regency Imperial and a Lafayette Comstat 25-B if anyone out there has such, I'm a buyer. Jester wrote:That squealing feedback is hideous....the one thing I have noticed about people who have had this done to their radios is that they have become pariahs that stick to one or 2 channels max, because the truckers on 19 won't put up with that crap!

No one wants to hear that. They want to hear clear, loud audio that the Browning is known for, not some god-awful squeal...
Im not sure what they do in your parts
but i talk on what ever channel the skip is rolling on
if skip is on 19 then guess what im not going to let some gearjammer or steering wheel operator get in my way.
and they can do it the easy way or the hard way
they can put up with my driver or they can do it the hard way with both footpedals down
then they can either listen or turn it off.
truckers own no channel.
my Birds and all my Bird watts will soar and sing all day.

i find it funny
they tell me to turn that radio off its squeling i say ok let me turn the mark 2 off and get on another radio
then i fire up the mark IV well that gets them going ok ok i will turn it off
then i fire up the mark III this is the loudest of them all.
and has the longest squawlk of them all.
so where ever skip is im talking on it
they dont like it Tough ____

I know I'm going to sound like an **Censored** for this, but that "ping" is why I despise Eagles. There's a local here that runs one and it annoys me to no end. Never have liked them. I see I'm in the minority here :)

They are an American made radio made out of high quality materials for their time. My mark III has proven to be reliable, and has outperformed any radio that I have ever put against it. Show me an RCI, Galaxy, Cobra, Uniden, Stryker, Magnum, Mirage, or whatever radio that can take the abuse and heat like an old browning can? I guarantee you'll be sending those chinese made pieces of junk back to the repair shop to have the mosfets/pills/finals replaced after they overheat and burn out! The audio of a browning cannot be touched by anything made today, PERIOD!

My MKIV is suffering from old age and had to go to the bird hospital. When he comes back there will be me, the ping and another Golden Eagle with 6 20LF6 making a point. Yea baby. Nothing like Golden Eagle audio and a receiver so sensitive and squelch so soft you can hear mouse farts
