Will a tabletop model shortwave receiver such as a Grundig or CCrane pick up the cb frequencies. I was thinking about getting one to monitor skip rolling in so I can get out there in the shack and talk it.

If it's a general coverage receiver 500kc-30mhz it will. But don't expect it to very sensitive or selective the higher in frequency you go.

my experience listening to the DX of any form, i say the scanners are better than any shortwave receiver, but then again, ya can also scan the world better on a shortwave receiver than ya could with a scanner, if its local skip that ya want than try a scanner if not then get a shortwave receiver, but whatever ya do, its all about the antenna that ya use too....Dj

Whether using a shortwave receiver or scanner...neither one will receive very much unless it has an antenna that is close to being resonant on CB. Most shortwave and scanner antennas are too short.
