will this run a 8 pill?????
Good evening everyone,bayou slim here.I just switched out into a intrenational diesal wagon with a 170a big case delco remy alt and was wondering would it be enough to run a comp style 1x2x8 pill box????? The alt is a 12v alt and it charges at 14v with all accesories on and when at idle about 14.5v. Any info is greatly appreciated.......bayou slim readn' the mail!!

If you're planning on running your truck and the amp off this 170a, then it's not going to be enough. The amp alone probably draws a maximum of 180 amps. You can loaf it, and it should run about 70a or so without keying but you won't be doing the amp any justice.

Can you post a picture of the alternator? Is it a v-belt or serpentine pulley setup? We might be able to get you in the 250 amp range.

The pully is a serpitine style for the alternator mechman......how would I get into the 250a range???? Replacing alternator???(company truck,can't do that)

Hi byuslim. your truck should have four batteries. you should be able to run that 8 pill.i,ve done with a 165amp.keep dead key at 600 - 700 watts let it swing.i live in metairie maybe i,ll here you local channel 14.

170amp alt. 6batts. SWP Gen lee 1-2-8 pill man that setup should be smokin . Tbird and #5 live a few miles away i,ll wave that five for ya. good luck let me know how it works.

I'm thinking the same thing big r.in the mud right now though as I'm waiting on rush hour (my antenna man) to finish my mount for my new vertical he built,but that gives me time to figure out how to run my rg213 coax in my international truck without drilling a hole.thx for keeping my 5 alive and I'll definitely be reading the mail on you to wave my hand when my setup is complete. .....mr bayou slim readn' the mail!!!!!BIG R 184 wrote:170amp alt. 6batts. An 8 pill requires a 200 amp alternator for it alone to power it properly. Of course you have to power the driver and the truck's electrical system also. If you think it'll cut it as is, that's your opinion but ask any amp builder and they will tell you the same thing I just did.

Seeing as how it is all in one box, I would try and bypass the 1 pill section if you are set on using the Lee because it will overdrive the 1 pill which in turn will probably overdrive the 2 pill, thus taxing your charging system even more.

To be more than safe you have to figure 160 amps for the 8 pill section and 40 amps for the 2 pill section, and 15 for the 1 pill section. Figure if you drive at night 70-90 amps for the truck.I agree with rex foxhound about bypassing the 1 pill section, that 1x2x8 all in one would be REAL TOUCHY.
If you don't get long winded the 165A with the batteries would work.....but will be way, way, way, way short of it's potential.
The ideal alternator for your truck would be around 300 amps and that would make that amp "Be all it can be". If it is a company truck then just hammer it down as is, but the alternator will be working real hard to keep up. The batteries will supply amps but the alternator will maintain the volts. Voltage drop kills power output.

Since ur in a company truck, forget about that alternator- if u mess with it u could be risking ur job or the company could switch trucks on u leaving u without power again- what u need is a motormaul! U can install that right under ur bunk and u will have plenty of power that can be moved if need be. They make em for 200amps,300amps on up to 800amps if u want to know more go to http://www.worldwideamplifiers.com and click on motormaul---deuce

2+8 draws 180 max.since you can,t change alt your stuck with what is there. if you allready have the 8 pill try it . it will work not 100 percent but it will work. if not 2+6 would work better. buy a 200 amp motor maul and run 100 percent all day. i know a lot of people running the same setup on less alt may not be 100 percent but still sounds good. 300 amp alt would be ideal set up . if you run like it is keep dead key in 500 wat range it won,t draw 180 amps. my son run a little less alt in a 02 pete and swings to 1400 watts dos,nt run at night though . he goes by grease monkey in hammond area. every one here is give you good advice . if you can afford the motor maul that would solve your problem. the 220 amp moror maul will run your 2+8.

grease monkey runs ch 19 unless hes talking skip . he uses a 2pill scull cracker & a 8 pill xforce & 4300 CONNEX. he can talk on 2 pills and turn on the 8 when he needs it . works the alt less that way. a 200 amp motor maul +2 batts 950 cca will run your 2+8. irun a 16 pill on a 400 amp motor maul 2 d8+ 2group 31 batts . i set the mm at 16 volts. setting up a motor maul is easy and won,t affect your truck.
