Starting my 1st base

#239457

Post by BIGHOG »

Good evening everybody! I have been playing with the idea of setting up my first base staion. I have been reading the posts but am still undesided. Should I get something like a GL or a Galaxy and then a power supply or a radio that will run on AC. I have two very large chimneys on the house that are about 50' high. So the ant. location is a no brainer. What are opinions on the ant.? A99, Imax............ Ground plane or no? Just throwing around some ideas in my head. I have been off the forum for a while. Hope everyone is doing well. I am looking forward to the input. Oh and what is up the the "beams" everyone talks about ?

On the radio type I cannot tell you that it is your preference either will work well and do about the same. I would have to say the Imax 2000 is a lot better than the A99 even thought the A99 is a great antenna. The ground plane thing is something I can't help with but if money isn't an object why not. And the "beam" is a directional antenna. Hope that helps good luck.

It's cool that you are thinking of installing a base I myself am getting ready to put my base station back up. I like the A99 for a ground plane, I use one and so do a lot of my friends. I've personally talked about 40 miles with a bare foot Cobra 29 on a power supply. You can get a lot of modulation out of a mobile radio/power supply setup especially if it has been peaked & tuned. I hope to catch you on the key sometime in the near future. 73's from the top side of the Bayou, T-Bone545 & I'm back out.
