Is there any way to find out when my Cobra 142 GTL was made ? I just bought it for $20 and it looks brand new and I was just curious how old it was.

my friend used to have 1 for 3 yrs and his did very well. maybe someone can help better on this. and welcome to the board. :chef:

Probably between 20 and 30 years of age. You bought it for 20 dollars? Does it work?

Yeah it works. It came in the original box along with the stock mic. I bought it off an older guy that said he bought it brand new and only hooked it up once. He was selling it for $40 on Craiglist and I emailed him saying I would give him $20 not thinking he would respond. He called me 15 minutes later and said he would take $20 for it because it was just collecting dust. When I picked it up I wasn't expecting much for $20 bucks but he had it all wrapped up in the box... I still can't get over how new this thing looks.

This is my first base station, So I have been wearing out the search button in the top right hand corner of this page for the last few days. I'm have been trying to decide on a good antenna, mods, and a mic.

Think I found a Maco Alpha V 5/8 on craiglist new in the box for $50 .. I'm going to pick it up tomorrow morning. I was going to purchase an Imax 2000 and put it up in a pine tree 40ft up. Will the Maco be alright on a 30ft pole or should I spend the extra money and put the Imax in the tree ?

Hi svoad,

The Cobra 142 was accepted for production in 1977 in the USA. Where was it made? Cobras, in general, where first made in Hong Kong, then in Taiwan, then in the Philippines. Today the Cobras are made in China and some in Malaysia. The Cobra 142 was only made in Taiwan and the Philippines.

If your radio sat around unused then I can guarantee that the controls need some contact cleaner. I would use a contact cleaner with some silicone in it. You should always turn the controls and and switches regularly even if you do not use them. The worst thing you can do to a CB is not use it or the controls. The controls will become scratchy.

It sounds like you hit a home run. Have fun.
Respectfully as always,

Rick
