Need Some Help

#244897

Post by Bo Dilly »

Frist , Man I'm glad I found this site, it has been great. My question is, if I wanted to set up a base station with a 12v deep cycle battery power supply, could I keep my on board boat battery float charger on while keying down on the radio?
The charger will maintain the battery with out over charging, and can stay hooked up for months on end. I sure don't want to ruin a radio or anything else.
I was told that when you key the radio it will draw down the recommended amps of the battery and cause power lost while broadcasting.
I know using the 110v is better, but this set up is for emergency power outage in our community. Last winter we lost all power, including cell phones for about a wee, because of ice. It was a very bad, we lost a neighbor from exposure from the cold temps with no heat in there home.
There are a few of us in our retirement community, Cherokee Village, Ar. that are gonna try to set up like this to help in these type emergency's.
Any help in this would be greatly apprecaited.

Can you do it? Yes. .. Will it harm your radio? Probably not.

A charger does introduce unwanted noises into your audio though. A battery will filter it.. however you will probably get a "whine"

Why not use a 13.6 V power supply daily.. and have a battery or two charged for emergency backup?

combine the original post with what t rodd said.

get yourself a power supply with that radio, and all is golden. THEN, also have at least 2 or maybe 3 batteries charged and ready to go... keep em charged with your float charger until you need em.

when/if your power goes out, you got 2-3 batteries to rock and roll on.

i guess if the power is out long enough, you can recharge em in your vehicle... or maybe even perhaps a solar charger ?
