#247546

Post by Rex »

Hey guys,I got a problem here

my radio ain't acting right. I will tell the story hope yall like reading.

My radio is a TRC-503, I have had it about a week of this post, and my radio is acting funny. One day I was comming home from dropping off a friend and I was talking to this guys on channel 10, for about 5 minutes, and I said seeya I am signing off, and he said ok and we parted. Then 3 days later I was on channel 6 listen to these guys and I said while there was a long break I said "radio check" cause it was still a new radio, and then the whole channel went silent like every just left and I called again "radio check" again no response so then I was like oh it's just a quenkeydink. Then 2 days later I was listen to channel 20 and I called "radio check" and again the whole channel went silent again. Then I was like wtf is going on here this ain't right sooooooo now I am wondering if it is my antenna or my radio. Also I am have alot of destructive interferance from my engine when running. So if you guys could help I would apperiate it.
Thanks

Before I did anything drastic/permanent, I think I'd try using a different phrase than "radio check" to see what kind of response I got. Or find some sweet sounding female to say "radio check". See where I'm going with that? That's no reflection on you at all, by the way, just one'a them things that tends to not get responded to all that much. If 'Sweet Thang's transmission doesn't get a response, you might have your radio checked...

You could go back a double check you swrs and all connections, then get with the guys you were talkin with on ch 10 and get some reports back from them. Another thing you try is if you have an swr meter, run it in line and when this happens check the swr's and if they are high that will give you something to go by. Hope this helps.

Rex, before you give it up...I have experienced the same thing with more than one radio. Call for a radio check on a channel that has traffic and all you get back is static. It's like the whole CB community suddenly decided to quit talking. A second call for a radio check ... not a single response! It was NOT the radio! In fact, switching to another channel that was in use I was able to get a "loud and clear" response to my call for a radio check.

The above has happened more than once and on more than one radio install. It is unfortunate but it happens that a lot of CB operators just won't respond to a radio check. They will shut up though just in case another CB operator is willing to respond.

As for checking your SWR, try to find a friend with an SWR meter. Well worth the effort to tune your antenna!

Hi Rex,

As Doc mentioned if the "Sweet Thang" method does not work, then the radio may have an intermittent problem. I would gently press on the CB's board, when the channel goes dead, and see if it comes back. If so, then you have a cold solder connection or a dirty control. Contact cleaner will help a dirty channel selector or switch.

I had a night where no was giving me a response. I had a girl in the shop and asked her to say "Can I have a radio check please" The whole channel came alive from polite responses to the dirty old man come backs. I told the owner "I think your radio is working"

Sometimes the "Sweet Thang" test is the best method to see if your radio is working.

Just my 2 cents,
Respectfully as always,

Rick

Thanks for the resposes. As for the radio checking. I live in the city kinda and I am far to out of range for people to far to hear me. but I can hear them kinda. and for a swr check none of my friends have one or family.
