alt whine
hi promises here, got a crazy problem in my wifes pt crusier i installed a cool magnum 357 thats right a 357,it comes with a seperate rf section and a 9 foot computer style conector,a very nice 10 meter radio,i hooked up direct to battey,on the plus side and the ground as short as poss to the pass seat frame,it gets alt whine in the speaker on rec,not to bad but the main problem is it also transmits the alt whine,as she drives the car and the rpm changes the whine changes with it i can still understand her but the whine is pretty strong, ive tried a 35 amp filter made for sterio systems it cures it on the recieve, but when ya try to talk and ket the mic it drops the voltage dome to 9.5 volts and it sounds like im under water,i use ssb mainly low voltage and ssb dont mix, anybody have any ideas to cure my problem thanks promises aka jon..
No idea what your stereo filter is, but it's obviously not enough. You might try just by-passing the power line along with that filter.

did you not have enough ground wire to run it back to the battery as well
why not finish the circuit

Hi Promises, on my Ford diesel I ran hot and ground to the battery......still had a vicious alternator whine......so ran a #2 welding cable from alternator to frame and another from battery to frame. Alternator noise is totally gone along with fuel pump noise and others......just an idea.....good luck!
Whatever goes around, comes back around.......sooner or later.

I always thought if you're running both leads back to the battery, they need to be the exact same length. At the very least, my negative always goes to the battery ground. No noise problems.

In all of my experience it is best to do the following. Run a new 0 gauge from alt to battery. Run directly from battery to radio or amp fused. Run new grounds from battery to engine block, from battery to Frame and to the Body. When doing the grounds make sure to sand off paint to get a good connection. Seat frames are one of the worst ground locations available both the seat frame and the body frame are painted.

that is true about the seat frame i had my amp grfounded to the seat bolt and had nothing but problems in my dodge ram. i ended up running my ground wire to my frame of the truck through a hole in the floor (shortest ground possibe) and no more problems.

Unless you do some "RF Grounding" your never going to get rid of all that whining noise, which is probably coming from your fuel pump more than the alternator. (they sound about the same)
If you haven't already done so, ground the doors, hatch back, alt's, battery battery ground to the frame, and run a ground strap off the tail pipe to the frame...Tail pipes are held to the car by rubber straps, so they are not grounded very well, and can act like a antenna...
I had the same problems before with my Suburban, and once I grounded the tail pipes, now you can't tell if the motor is running or not...No whining from anything.
Need to use flat ground braid for this, and NOT round wire like you would use for the electrical power and ground...
Filters are worthless if the noise is coming in threw the antenna, which it more than likely is...

I agree with kicking the seat ground to the curb. Had problems with those myself. Run it to the Battery and a good non painted chassis ground. Those braided ground are real nice if you can use those too!!!!!! I like to use at least 8 gauge wire.

It may work...I'm just saying if you do some RF grounding, filters may-not be nessesary...Night Crawler wrote:The filter on the the link specified curing alternator whine which is the only thing it will do.jessejamesdallas wrote: Filters are worthless if the noise is coming in threw the antenna

'JJD',
If you will change that "filters are not nessesary..", to "filters -may not- be necessary", I'd agree with you, mostly.
