Need a yaesu ft 101 technician

#184260

Post by 1skywalker »

Bought a so called mint shape yaesu ft 101ee. 20 down to 160 meters does ok. 11-10 meters has little to no output or ears. checked it out on a dummy load. 1/2 watt at best on 11 and 10. I followed the tuning steps so I dont think its a tuning problem. Can someone recomend a good tech. Thanks

Let me see if I understand you correctly, you are saying you have no or very low AM carrier on 10 & 11m, correct ?

Does it operate on SSb or CW? if so what is the out put?

Yes about a quarter or half watt on 11 and all the 10 bands with the carrier at max. Very little receive on those bands also. I.C. current barely moves the meter during tune up. The same results on all modes. I can hear people talking on 11 just very low.

I have been using it on 75 meters most all day with good reports.

When I say not a tuning problem I mean the band tune up using carrier/plate and preselect. I have not done any internal adjustments. It is going to need the am filter and which ever mods to make it perform on am.

Any help would be great, thanks for the reply Bee

Even with out the AM filter, you should still be able to receive, just sound very muffled that's all and To install the AM filter, you will also need the switch mod, other wise your AM RX will be on CW mode. The FT101 AM filter is about $120 plus 2 hour to install and add the switch mod, shop rate @ $60~$70/hour.

As for the weak carrier, I suspect you have a problem in you AM carrier control module but why also lose signal on RX puzzles me, maybe you also have a defective mode switch and/or band switch, the bad news is they don't make those part any more, you will have to find a donor radio or rebuild the switch, to rebuild, you are looking at least $150 for each switch.

As for a good FT101 tech, they are far from between most likely you will have ship it out, you may try Phil Chambley k4dpk@comcast.net my last dialog with Phil he said he is not taking on any more out side work till he get caught up...(whatever that means) I know money talks, so maybe you can talk him into taking a closer look at your unit.

Good luck, keep me posted on your progress

Bee, you being into older radios you would have loved the huntsville hamfest. I saw two trams d201 and d201a mint condition, bunches of h/crafters and h/kits even a tempo one. a bunch of older 11 meter and ham rig I couldnt identify.

I was wondering if someone went to that from the forum, I wish I could have made it. Were there a bunch of good deals? I am currently on the lookout for a hf rig.

Man, I wish I was there, sounds like lots good stuff exchanged hands, I hope you made out OK.
I'm in the mids of restoring another D201A. This one has a hinged top, with a tamper shut off switch&override, it's very rare. I replaced all the caps and installed a 5" PC type cooling fan directed at the finals, combined with a D104, I got great reports during my initial testing. I hand rubbed 7 coats of tung oil on the wood end-caps, it will look like a fancy gunstock when I'm done.
My current 201A requires 10 min technical difficulty break (overheat) during those long winded key ups, it drives me nuts it's the reason I went to the 101E, I love the 101, but I think the Tram sounds richer on AM.
If you fancy old time radios, I' can send you some pics when I get done with it .....hopefully in the next week or so.

BTW, do you recall the show price for the 201 & 201A?

the tram d201 was 175 dollars. It was so clean inside you could eat in there. I didnt get the price on the other stuff. I missed out on two new in the box 101e's by 5 minutes I was sick til I found the one I bought.

Wow, hard to believe a ticket operator will sell you a bunk 101 without prior disclosing the issues, have you tried contact the seller?
I was taking to an operator a few weeks back, he has a similar carrier issue like yours, only his problem shows in AM mode only in all bands but in SSB and CW mode it work just fine, I have not had the chance to catch him on the air again, I'm curious if he got it figured out, I think the problems could be closely related.

I talked to the old owner today. I got his name/call and phone number. He said he never used it above 40 meters. I didnt ask for a return, I am going to try to fix this one. It is so clean it looks new inside and out. Maby I can find someone to work on it.

I run the FT-101F and the FT-101ZDM1 and there should be what is called a lamp fuse on the back of the radio of the EE.
It is located just above the RCV input port to the lower right of the fan.
This lamp fuse protects the RF Amplifier transistor from damage which may be caused by extremely strong local signals.
They were not installed on earlier models but could be added on.

There is a service manual available and if you don't have it I would get a copy. I would check out the FoxTango web site. If it is a FT-101 radio the answers can be found there.

The 101 is still in the same shape, but since I bought it I have given up on 11 meters in my area. So now the problem on 11 and 10 is a non issue "I never use 10" and no need for the am filter. She works like a dream on 75ssb @110 watts.

kd4ovm if ya work 75 we ned to get a sked going.

Would be glad too once I get my antennas back up. I've moved and I haven't gotten my 40' tower back up in the air.
