Export Install Help

#264876

Post by Pulaski »

I just wired and installed a 1 year old used but not abused Magnum S-3 into my pick up. I've installed 4 watt CB's and amps as well but this is my first export radio. I'm running an 8ga power wire from the battery into the cab. 40 amp fuse at battery and near radio. The Scosche fuse in the cab is what is connecting the 8ga to the like 14ga CB power cord.
Now the person I bought the radio from had the radio, mike and mount but no power cord. I'm thinking, no biggie. I'll use a spare from my old Cobra, you know, the one with the little 2amp fuse. I power up, check swr (Wilson 1k) and key down for a radio check. In five seconds, the 2 amp fuse pops. Do I even need this 2amp fuse coupling for an export or do they make a stronger fuse? If so, where can I pick one up? Like I said, I'm already fused twice along my power line. My ground is the CB power cord ground running all the way to the battery ground. Thats how all my other radios have been wired and its worked well. Thanks for any help.

Like you said, your already fused twice inline on the power, ditch the little 2 amp, you should be fine.

Wait, try a 7 amp fuse inplace of the 2 amp first, because the 40's maybe a little to big to prevent any damage before popping.
My thoughts anyway, and I am NO electrical genious.

Ok Thanks. I wasn't sure if the power cords for exports came with those little inline fuses or not. I'll snip and splice then.

Yes they come with inline fuses, that's why I said to try the 7 amp instead of the 2, because I think those 40 amps are too big to prevent any possible overload damage before they pop.

Ordered a power cord from Sparky. It's a 12 ga cord with a 10 amp fuse both on the power and ground. I'll run that to my 8 ga line and I should be all set. In the mean time, I'll replace the blown fuse so that I can at least listen in.
