New system and I have problems.
I just bought a new midland hand held radio with a firestik II. I have the firestik on the magnet mount. When I try to tune my antenna, I'm in the red on channel 1 and below the red on channel 40 (2.6 or so). I have the adjustment screw as far out as it goes too. So I thought maybe the cable is coiled up, it wasn't. Then I thought maybe the spring and the quick disconnect were causing trouble, so I took those off. I thought maybe I was too close to buildings, so I drove to a wide open place. As far as I know magnet mounts don't need grounding. I'm all out of ideas. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advanced!

Problem solved! Apparently I'm an idiot.lol
I never had a fiberglass antenna before and I didn't know I had to put the plastic cap back on each time I adjusted the screw. I was being lazy and I kept it off every time I was tuning it.
Both channel 1 & 6 are close to 1.6. That's not bad being nothing is grounded.

buggy, check the legenth of the coax going to the magnet mount. i think it should be in multiples of 3 (3ft,6ft,9ft-and so on) If it is too long or too short you may have to trim it and re-connect it.

It's an 18 ft coax.
