Browning Golden Eagle Mark IVa tech opinions
Can anyone recommend the very best technician to work on a Golden Eagle Mark IVa? I don't have any serious problems with it that I am aware of, however I just need someone to go through it who is knowledgeable, and experienced with these. I plan to have it for a very long time, and would prefer not to have any solder ball technicians working on it. Can I get some references/opinions on this? Much thanks.

When it comes to Browning Golden Eagles there is only 1 shop to send it too......

Its not a real radio unless it has tubes and USB/LSB on the front panel ....

Re: Browning Golden Eagle Mark IVa tech opinions
I havent a clue on all the differences but the main one is Mark3 is 23 channel and crystal controlled and the MarkIV and IVA are Brownings leap into PLL system.

Ok thanx im sure a vfo can go on the Mark 3, i had a midland 23 with a vfo. I have always wanted a Browning! Not to crazy about all the new stuff , guess im old school. When the 40 channels came out they did not have the modulation like the 23s. My opinion.

True,,,I ran a MarkIII with a Pal VFO for over a year with great success. Too long ago for me to remember what I did with it but wish I had kept it.

Speaking of pictures. At x-mas usually dig out a home video ot two for my sons and gd-babies to watch. Pulled the one from 1988 and there in numerous shots was my Mark III w Pal vfo. Brought back some memories. Have my Dad's old MarkIV in fixit shop,,crossin my fingers.... meanwhile idling on his 2000 . After a 17-18 year rest the 2000 is still playing well,,,few burnt bulbs is about it. There is much much info on the net on the Brownings,,,search is your friend.

Re: Browning Golden Eagle Mark IVa tech opinions
The pll has always been the problem with it. Dad [as far as I know} never did get it right. Truthfully I thought it had gotten buried or sold but my brother had it in storage along with other stuff. It is the Mark IV not the IVA far as I can tell. I know what happened to all my stuff. Boxed it up and sold all of it around 92. I did keep A Polytronics tuber and a Knight tuber,,then revived Dad's 2000 ,,it is working well and the Browning is or should be in the shop by now. He had amps and power supplies also,,havent a clue where all that went. I remember giving his Moonraker 4's to someone but he had retired to east Tennessee so distance and memory have erased where those went.

Re: Browning Golden Eagle Mark IVa tech opinions
Any of them are pretty good radios. The Browning Mark 3 is a 23 channel radio, the Browning Mark 4 is the new 40 channel they came out with. Now from what I understand they had some problems with the Browning Golden Eagle Mark 4 when they first came out with it, hence the Golden Eagle Mark 4A. Apparently it is the final finished and perfected product. But like I said, I wouldn't turn any of them down.Jawbreaker wrote:Since you are a owner of a Browning whats the differance between the mark 3 and the mark 4? Im looking at buying a mark 3.

Is there a way to expand the Mark III with out a vfo, or is the vfo the best way?

Re: Browning Golden Eagle Mark IVa tech opinions
You know I honestly don't know. I have seen people selling these things on fleabay and such with digiscans on them, but I am somewhat new to this particular setup and don't want to tell you something I don't know about. I acquired mine several months ago, and I'm what I guess you'd call a loyal cb er. I have had to actually go to Iraq in order to be able to support my cb habit. My Golden Eagle, along with the other toys listed, and some that are not are all packed away in boxes awaiting my arrival so I can enjoy. Possibly one of the more knowledgeable operators out there would know.Jawbreaker wrote:Is there a way to expand the Mark III with out a vfo, or is the vfo the best way?

You can't use a Digi-Scan with a crystal synthesized radio which the Mark III is.Desert Fox wrote:You know I honestly don't know. The Digi-Scan is for a radio that uses a PLL.
The only other way to expand the Mark III is to change the bank of 16mhz crystals which wouldn"t be practical cost wise as it would only give you one channel per crystal.
The only economical to do it is to use a VFO.

Not sure if crystals are still available but will work for some users. I stay in a 10 channel bracket and never stray so it would work for me.

Well im not sure what to do with it , i might just leave it as a 23 channel . Dont think i want to mess with it to much since there classics. Maybe put a vfo on my SBE console II, or a getting a 142gtl always looking. Im seriously hooked again lol.

From the info received on here my MarkIV was completely gone through and pinging away for a month now. That trip to Alabama it made was the trick. The radio had never played right and was a big headache since @ 1985. In fact,,,purchased another one maybe can get redone later this year. Thanks for the help and thanks to Greg . Hmmmmmm,,,,now I wonder how to wire this ElectroVoice to it.
