Unless you're running amateur radio with official call letters (like with HAM), you don't need call letters (or numbers)

When you're shooting skip on the Citizen's Band (which is ILLEGAL, according to the FCC), you can make up any DX number you want. That's just for your convenience, so when somebody repeats your number back to you, you know you made the trip.

However, there's a lot of identical DX numbers out there, which can screw you up. So you need to give a handle along with the DX number — like, mine is WildRoot 313 — and, if you can say anything memorable in addition to that, it definitely helps. For instance, you might say, "WildRoot 313, on the Hillbilly Hotline from the Carolinas!"

People laugh at stuff like that, and they're more likely to come back to you. I first used that "Hillbilly Hotline" expression a few years ago, talking to Arkansas, and MAN people started yelling at me from all over the country and clean down to Jamaica, mon. "WildRoot! WildRoot, come back to Jamaica on dat Hillbilly Hotline!!"

FYI It doesnt have to be three numbers. For example, 4040 has four numbers, and there are several operators with two numbers. Tree-five in Jamaica has only two. LOL

I had a dude in Wisconsin whistle part of a tune back to me once... but that was as close to making a DX contact I have come.
