Recently while talking on my galaxy 959, somthing strange started hapening. Every few time i would try to transmit, the person i was talking to, my talk back feature and the radio it self make a whining noise. Also while this does this, it burries my modulation meter to the max. I am thinging that it could be a mic problem but am not sure. also while it makes the whine, the swr goes down to minimum. I have a DX959 peaked and tuned by Bells CB, other than that it is bone stock no mods what so ever. I run a stock mic also no modifications, and a 4FT fire stick as my antenna. The radio is only a few months old.
The next time the radio acts up give it a good whack; if it comes back, then you have a cold solder connection. I call it the Cross Bronx Express Test.
It could be anywhere on the board by the description you have given. If the talk back doesn't work, then I would check around the audio chip.
I only use ssb once and a while and i havent had it happen to me on ssb yet. Also is galaxys 4-pin mic plug the same as the cobra 4-pin? would it work? I have a 4 pin cobra mic.
also, if it is not the mic, what should i be looking for when looking for a cold solder connection on the board?
The Cobra 4 Pin standard will fit the 959. Wait until it acts up again and give it a good tap. If it fixes the problem, then remove the covers, and pull outward on the chassis. Look at the solder side and see if any of the audio chip connections pull away from the board.
Some colder solder connections are easier to spot than others; you may have to tap on the board with a non-metallic object and see if it acts up. Tap gently until you come to an area that acts up easily and that is where the problem is.
If it wasn't for the talk-back not working, I would say the problem is under the waxed area of the radio. This where the VCO and the frequency synthesizer circuity is located. This would more likely be where you would have a cold solder connection.
Solder small areas at a time and and then test it again. This way if you create a solder bridge you can find more easily.
I'd try the warranty for sure. My bet would maybe be the mic, but also check the tightness of the antenna plug. If it works itself loose you can get some squirrely behavior. Mine did, and I redid the coax once before finding it, thinking it was a feedline or connector issue.

Hey Sorry guys for not replying in a timly fasion, iv been very busy latley. As far as the radio its fine now. i opend her up and looked around but dident find much, so i put it back together and it worked fine... kinda funny, i have fixed so many things just by taking them apart and puthing them back together. it hasn't acted up yet since i posted this thred so i guess its ok. thanks for all of the help, i cant tell you how much i appreciate it.
