Need help with Uniden Pro 510xl install

#289742

Post by Jubal »

I just bought this used 510xl at a yard sale--not even sure if it works. I'm trying to hook it up, but the cigarette lighter plug that I'm using blows its fuse immediately when I plug it in. If I try the cigarette plug without the radio hooked up to it, it doesn't blow its fuse. Any ideas what's happening?

First off welcome to the forum.

Being it's only a $40 radio new, I'm not sure how much effort you want to put into it. But I'd pop the cover and check the protection diode. If it's popped (which I'd guess it is) hopefully that's all that's wrong with. Solder a new one in and try it. I would highly recommend you meter the wiring (plug) before you hook it up, too. If that doesn't solve the problem, if it were mine I'd probably write it off and go get a new one. They are a great little radio but hardly worth paying someone to fix it.

Best of luck and enjoy the forum.

Thanks for the welcome, 321. I actually have another cb, a Cobra 25 LTD that works perfectly, only it's so large, I can't find a place to fit it in my 2000 4runner. So when I found this little 510, I thought, hey that's perfect. Probably is the diode, as you say. How do I find it? Will it be evident when I pull off the cover? I know how to solder, but am not really an electronics tech.

Actually, I can find a place to fit the Cobra in the 4runner, but it's at my wife's feet, and she doesn't like it there, so if anyone has a suggestion for a good place to install that radio in the kind of vehicle I'm driving, and how to run the wires--I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know.

It will be in the back of the radio near where the power cord plugs in marked as D18 it should be be replaced but to find out if it's bad just clip either end of it if the radio powers up replace it and your done if not something else is wrong.
