Anybody know physical size of 811a tubes?

#292717

Post by PoeDunk »

I am looking to buy an Ameritron 811h soon and in order to get it shipped correctly I will be sending the seller premade boxes to pack the tubes individually and then an over pack box to hold the 4 tube boxes. I don't want to have to buy new tubes for a used amp.

I need the physical size of 811a tubes when unplugged.

Thanks,

I can see your goal, but man, by the time you burn the gas to buy the boxes to ship to the guy and take all that time and trouble you might be better off gambling on his shipping and packing skills. Those 811a tubes are not all that expensive. I bet you'll be out the cost of at least one by the time you do all that.

Nah. Not a problem. I own my own business and do tons of shipping every day. I just needed to know the dimensions so I could look around in my inventory for the right size boxes and send them off full of bubble wrap and foam. I will probably send the eventual seller shipping labels and all that stuff so all they have to do is pack the stuff up right and drop it at a kinkos drop.

If I actually had to go track all that stuff down and get it out there it would probably be a waste, but I already have everything I need and now I know the sizes I will be dealing with. All I have to do now is wait for the right deal on the amp and buy it.

Thanks everyone. The 1940's data sheet was awsome! I'll be prepared now when I find my amp.

Those are great amps. Also look at the big ham dealers, they come up used often due to their popularity. Don't forget to search locall on craigslist too. Recently I've ran across several by just typing in a search for Ameritron.

Night Crawlers measurements didn't seem right to me as I have numerous 811A's. Here is what I came up with.

U.S. RCA:

I have one of the three tube AL-811's. They are nice little amps with U.S. or Russian tubes. I'm not a fan of the Chinese 811's as there are to many horror stories out there. The Chinese 572B's seem to be OK though.

Very cool. Thanks guys. The pictures are a great help. The fist set of specs are only off by the overall diameter of the tubes. At least that is the way it looked. Then again the first set are a copy of a 1940's data sheet when they were probably the greatest thing since indoor plumbing. Overall the data sheet was helpful as well because I was able to search out the file name in google and found even more pages from the data book that will be helpful in the future as well.

I never thought of looking on craigs list for those amps. That was a good idea because I would be able to see it before buying. I really do like this forum. Lotsa good info.

I figured he just typoed on the diameter as Night Crawler is a wealth of good information and knows far more about this hobby than me. I thought I'd do some comparing as well since I had a feeling the Russian tubes were a different diameter due to the different shape of their globes.
