where do you talk skip on ssb?
SSB can be much better for local communications if the terrain is bad and mountainy. However really good ssb radios are few and far between. The RCI 2950 is a world class (inexpensive for what you get) ssb rig. While its not as stable as a Icom for example, they are great ssb radios. If I were buying a ssb radio, the 2950 is by far one of the best on the market. They talk AM really well too. I just came out with a improved superwackpack for them that works great.
SSB can be fun if you have a bunch of guys on there that like to get together to chit chat. While I perfer the ease and use of AM chit chatting on a off chn, SSB groups can be fun. What I hate about alot of SSB users are they have this attitude like theres special rules on SSB.
For example on 27.555 its the international call chn for ssb. (26.915 is the am, call chn) anyway, the guys on those freqs try to act like ham radio operators. They tell people what they can and cant say and do. They get mad when people act stupid on those freqs. Well reality is 27.555 is not a legal freq to talk on, so therefore its like the middle of the ocean, the captain rules the ship. If your on a illegal freq, facts are there are no rules. If you want rules, and call signs get a ham license! SSB guys like that take themselves so seriously, when infact they are just out of band operators like the rest of the people. When skips rolling, I go to 27.555 sometimes to listen to these guys with their fake ham like calls signs (this is tango bravo foxtrot, 259er, zulu foxtrot from quadrent 213a calling all stations please QSY to 27.585 for possible contacts.)
Then some guy plays music and the other guy gets all mad. Im not advocating music, or fake call signs, but reality is on a illegal freq the guy has the same right to play music as the guy who makes up a fake call.
While they are faking ham radio operators, Im dropping the maul on AM, where the big watt king rules!
If you like SSB, thats great. From time to time you'll hear me on there, rare but I do from time to time. I greatly enjoy working on some ssb radios like the 2950 2970 95T and others. I dont put anyone down for using it, its just not for me.
Time to go play music on 27.555 got to go..........(JUST KIDDING)
PS: alls there is mountains between us and california!

SSb
I'm going to say this again. I like SSB!! I am going to put up the list as complete as I can and update it.
I'm not trying to get into a ****** contest with anyone!! I was and still am trying to help anyone interested in SSB. I use am, fm, usb & lsb.
I am a member of several SSB clubs and joining more. It is my feverent hope that others will try it and like it. The clubs have been a fun and fond time for me, I want to help expand that to others if I can help.
I am working 12- 20 hours a day, as I'm sure others are also. But I will take the time to do the list. Hopefully will have most of it tommarrow.

Exactly. I too dispise elitist attitudes. However, the guys that I've heard that act like that I don't talk to. And I agree with many of the guys up there running the big Kenwoods, Yeasu's, Icoms, etc. If they want to go to 10 meters...go. In that ( unmentionable ) band, is my favorite because it's usually quiet...especially 5 kc's down where we can gab some. Most all of my out of country contacts have been made up there...and I for one like it. I also enjoy AM-ing alot, too. Had an old guy give me a bad time one time upstairs, and it was hilarious! The rest of the guys around the country up there told him to go pound sand! We'd just put up one of my friends Moonrakers, and were having some fun. Good time for all...except that old' grouch!Mr.RadioActive wrote: SSB can be fun if you have a bunch of guys on there that like to get together to chit chat. I dont feel theres any "#^%$%^%$" contests going on. People have the right to disagree. If you read the posts I put up there isnt any contest going on.
Again, I like Corvettes. My cars perfect for me. But a soccer mom would disagree she may like a mini van. Does that make me wrong? Does that make her wrong?
Man, just because someone disagrees with you isnt a personal assult. You disagree with me, but do I feel offended? Not at all, again I'm totally sure your very knowledgable we welcome and encourage a interchange of ideas. But if someone disagrees that doesnt make it a attack.
Ive said it a thousand times, I love AM, just as much as many other guys. But SSB can be fun, I dont have $4000 in ssb rigs to talk to myself.
All that being said, lets get on with it and start posting some stuff to teach people. If we dont then we'd be acting no better then the boneheads on triple nickle!

Where do you talk on SSB?
The truth is when using SSB we can talk anywhere.
There are, as RA pointed out, some places that work better than others. I personally don't advocate the illegal channels, not that I haven't been there.
I like to use LSB from channels 35-40, for most things. The reason is not much traffic on AM to bother. As others have pointed out here, those channels are where the majority of contacts are made.
I have found too many SSB clubs to list. Since most of us found this website with a search engine, here is the net search I would suggest. (SSB CLUB dx 10 11 12 meter CB Ham RADIO). Good luck as there may be literally thousands. Most of them are for the hamsters, however, many are cb dedicated and only ask that you be polite.
I regularly talk to AU, Tahiti, Honalulu, Alaska, Switzerland, to name a few.
I have done this with nothing more than a stock Cobra 148, and I have also used dozens of others. Most any ssb capable radio will work, the secret is patience and the taller the antenna the better. Having said that I know a 14 year old who uses a fence around the farm for an antenna with great results.
All the power in the world may not help you hear someone out there, patience on the clarifier will.

Thats good to know Marvin. I have spent a little time doing searches on SSB but not that much time as I have so little as it is. I try to do a little when I work in the office but mostly I am out in the field. I will listen some more on 35 on up and see if I hear any more. I have heard some skip on am and have made one contact so far. Never did any in the past so DX is new to me.
It has been a while since I have been on here. Been busy driving. Had some free time tonight to get on here and I am glad I did. I really think this is a great forum and I like all the ideas and the input.
I want to thank everyone on here who posted about SSB. When I was into radios back in '79-81, I owned SSB radios and used to enjoy trying to talk skip. I have a old President Grant in my big truck now with a Wilson 2000 antenna and sometimes I will be driving down the road and I get tired of the garbage on channel 19 and I will start searching channels looking for some conversations. Unfortunately I have yet to find any conversations either on SSB or any of the 120 channels I have access too. I was wondering if SSB was actually still alive. I am glad in some parts of the country that it is still alive. This gives me new hope that I can get into some good conversations.
At one point I was thinking about getting a SWP General Lee but if I can actually get into some conversations, then I may have to reconsider what kind of radio I will looking at getting from RA.
One thing I have been interested in finding out is actually how to talk on SSB. According to Mr. RA, he is giving great examples of things not to say or do on the radio. So any help in this matter would be appreciated.
Again I appreciate all the feed back from all involved on these forums. This is a great forum.

ssb
I have to agree with RA. I want an RA radio sooo bad I see it in my sleep. Problem? I can't afford his radios. I feel like I got lucky when I found my RCI6900F150 for $200.00 practically brand new. Guy didn't like it and sold it. I have been talking skip on it barefoot on an A-99 that is only 10 to 12 feet off the ground and have made contacts in several states. Hopefully when I get me tower up things will improve more so but I think that if a guy like AM and want it have at it. On the other hand if you like sideband go for it. Me personally, I would like to do both but until I can afford a descent beam, rotor and amp I'll be happy with what I have and just continue to make what contacts I can in skipland. That's just a newbies 2 cents worth.
It cant hurt your skipping any with that dm 2x4!!!!!!! What are the dimensions of that thing anyway?Big Guns wrote:I talk plenty of skip on my SWP General Lee and Dave Made 2x4, 26.915. I talk everywhere from Florida to Mississippi, up the east coast and out to Michigan, Illinois all on am. I dont have an ssb option so Icant say anything about that.
