The RCI wins for overall performance... My only opinion in retrospect is that the Uniden Grant is more user friendly as a mobile. The RCI 2950 is much more elaborate and can be cumbersome to operate while driving. A hazard, in my opinion. I would feel more comfortable using the Grant.....

The uniden grant iv been offered is still virtually new in the box. It had a P&T with a open clarifier. Very good sounding radio. Seller wants $180(Canadian) for it. What do you guys think of the price??

What's the equivalent in US dollars ? Have you shopped around ? Have you looked at the "for sale" segment of this forum ? That Philly tag on the Grant XL's seems to draw top dollar.

180 isn't bad, Canadian clams are about the same as the yank dollar. I have found the opposite in regards to the 2950. I have found them to be junk, unstable, and even drift off to another feq all together. Might have been a bum unit. I have always liked the grant. Hey Tony, are you on the west coast?

ok guys i eneded up getting the Uniden Grant. Get great report on SSB. Is the open clarifier somehow related to the AM side also?? Because my recieve on the AM can get adjusted using the clarifier slightly. The receiver seems more quiet and muffled compared to my Galaxy 949. My Galaxy seems to be more sensative on the recieve.any thoughts ???

Yes, the open clarifier applies to all modes; on AM it works like a 'delta tune', and can be used to slide between channels if it's open far enough. Personally, I just like them unlocked so RX and TX track.

The receiver should be more quiet - these radios (and their exact duplicate brothers, the original Cobra 148GTL made in Taiwan or Philly) are renowned for their quietness and performance on receive. As for muffled - try moving the Tone switch and see if that helps (if it hasn't been coopted for a channel mod).

These are my favorite radios, and while the RCI-2950 is a hell of a radio, one of the best SSB mobiles around - it just doesn't have as refined of a receiver as these Grant XLs/148s.

wow Grant XL philly and RCI 2950 i know i love them both, i give the 2950 just an edge over the Grant xl because of the 30 watts, continous tuning vfo and freq display. it just seems like the Grant just has better RX. real quiet and selectivity is fantastic. thats why over these two i run my president 2510 most of the time, the 2510 seems like a like a Grant XL on RX and you get the TX wattage of a 2950 also continous tuning and a frequency display. top 3 radios in order of all time President 2510,RCI 2950 series and the Grant XL can't go wrong with any of these. take your Grant XL unlock the clarifier, add some channels and mount a FC 347 frequency counter and have some fun on the free bands. if you get a chance ever grab a President 2510 then you'll have a Grant XL and 2950 all in one.

I love both of the radios, but yes you guessed it, I'm for the RCI 2950. and as far as dirfting all over the place. well,..... it all depends on who has worked on the radio and what all they have done to it. (mods) only thing the 2950 needs is the clarifier opened up. other than that, it's just a waste!!! 73's
